What happens in everday usage when an OC is stable

post #1 of 24
Thread Starter
Well my sig OC i've tested with countless hours of prime..it's never BSOD'd or froze on me but today i just decided to test with prime95 again and worker 4 failed within 10 mins. Now if that deems this OC unstable even though i've never had a prob what would happen if i continued to use this OC? In games that use 4 cores, would it disable the 4th core because that's the one that failed in prime? Same goes with programs like video editors, would it only utilize 3/4 cores? To isolate the problem i set my cpu nb back to default and tested 3.8ghz still with stock volts and that was stable after 2 hours. I might try a higher voltage for the cpu nb to see if that stabilizes 2600mhz but not sure if i should since i've never had a problem. Also, even though i've never had a problem i'm not sure if i'm losing out on performance from this so called unstable core. Note: I ran 3dmark vantage and got ~13k which i heard is normal for my cpu, but would still like to hear from you guys.

I had a similar thing happen

310x12=3720 passed +10h a few times, but then failed a couple of times early on
so I went to 305x12 and did half a run for 6h (6950 arrived) and said to hell with and just put it to
308x12=3696
308x9=2772 CPU/NB

but I haven't primed it yet in just over a month, I should soon

EDIT: maybe I did to a P95 run of it, I'll have to check my log, or do one soon before the outside temps start getting much higher, as I'm already pretty much at the top of volts/temps

Sounds like either chip degradation or it never was actually stable.

It's not entirely unheard of for a chip to be stable in a stress test but crash under everyday use. Up the voltage on one bit and see if that fixes it. Just try to find the unstable part.

Well the thing is, it crashed in the stress test after passing it for 12 hrs like a month ago, and i just did it again before writing this with my sig OC again and it passed 30 mins and on, so maybe it was just af reak thing, i think i'll leave it at my sig OC, never had problems

you know, sorry to sort of hijack the thread here, but i wonder the same thing. As i recently OC'd my cpu and nb. And after 16 hours stable on prime95, 8 hours stable OCCT cpu test, and 6 hours stable OCCT linpack. I had crashes when playing games.

At stock settings everything works perfectly. How could the pc pass all of these stress tests and then not be able to do other tasking?

Could be a RAM problem, have you ran any memory stress tests?

If that was directed to me Moheevi I hadn't run any ram stress tests, didn't think i'd need to since i keep my ram at stock timings and frequency. Can you suggest any?
post #8 of 24
Well, what you have to consider is that beyond stock clocks you're not really guaranteed any stability. Given a long enough time line the probability of failure will exceed 0, therefore your chip will fail at one point. That's what happened in your situation. Nothing to worry about though, just up the core voltage one or two notches.

Not all CPU loads are equal, some test different components of the CPU than others.

Worker failure is the RAM and/or CPU/NB.
May be a program(like Antivirus - scan), which was running in background while P95 was running, and the RAM usage was higher than before

well i ran occt linpack which stresses ram to 95% usage. I also ran memtest and the windows built in memtest to see if it was my ram and all came back clean.
