Three monitors and ATI Crossfire confusion

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
I come to you helpful folks because Google and rampant speculation haven't solved my issues. I'm planning on upgrading a large portion of the computer in my signature, but have been stymied by a minor factoid brought up by a friend.

I'm going to be purchasing a second 1080p 23" monitor, added to my other 23" and 17". I was hoping to purchase two 6950's in Crossfire, and having two 1080p monitors to run two EVE clients, and one primary monitor for the occasional manshooter.

My friend brought up the fact that, in a single-card situation I would need an active DP adapter, and he threw around terms concerning Eyefinity which went in one ear and out the other because I don't really care for Eyefinity.

Basically, my question is: can I run three DVI monitors (or two DVI and one VGA) off of either a single 6950, or two 6950's in crossfire? Two of them have matching resolutions, the other is simply a dedicated foobar/thunderbird/whathaveyou screen.

You'll need a second card if you don't have display port monitors/adapters.

GPU1 = 2 screens
GPU2 = 1 screen (17")

DONE.

And the second card driving the single 17" can also be in Crossfire? Last time I did multi-card fiddling was first generation SLI hardware.

Last time I checked, all the monitors needed to be connected to one card in Crossfire mode for ATI/AMD. Did this change?

In Eyefinity is the question though. People had to buy Display Port adapters to get Eyefinity with 3 monitors. You could not plug in a DVI monitor into the second card in Eyefinity mode.
