Noise in front panel audio when USB header is attached. HELP

Thread Starter
Hi all, I've recently bought a case from NZXT(praise them for great products, and cust. service) Its called a Gamma case, and when i have my USB header attached, and my headphones plugged in (with the audio header attached), i hear noise from general internal I/O of my machine. (I.E. i hear the oscillation of data transfer with the hard disk) And when i have USB devices plugged into the front panel it is even worse. i have no IDEA what to do to fix this. my specs are in my signature (gonna update them after i post this) Google has failed me. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

either get a sound card or plug in directly from the back of the case, dont use the front panel headphone out.

I basically want this to have the convenience. I'm now thinking that my interference is 'cause because the usb ports are on the same circuitboard as my audio jacks. they are rather close together on a little PCB, so that may be the problem. when i unhook my USB header from the motherboard, The interference stops. (i wonder if i should get a standalone USB controller to connect with PCI-e) direct to back of case seems to work for now. but again, i would love to have the convenience. Thank you for your reply.

IIRC, on some cases, the front audio jacks share a common ground with the USB headers, causing the interference. Some don't share the same ground, but due to poor grounding, the two circuits do not stay seperate. There is a case mod to fix this, I just can't for the life of me find that link in my massive database of bookmarks. If I do find it, I'll post it for you.

Requires a bit of work, but it's doable.

Here's another way to go at it

Hope you find the info here helpful. If you decide to go thru with this, would it be too much trouble to ask for some pics and a work log? While I've never had to do this myself, I always enjoy reading other people's experiences and problems/solutions.

it's normal.

you'd want to plug directly into the sound card. too much interference.

Well, i've opened up my front panel, and revealed the circuit PCB that has all the ports on it. there is obvious evidence of same ground crap with the USB and the Audio jack shielding.

The above picture is an overall view of the underside of the board. you should be able to make it out what is USB and what is audio.

Here is labeled:

what i can do, is either cut the ground on the PCB with a dremel, (EDIT: maybe not dremel, just an xacto knife or something, cant really dremel things that small.) (not any leads, just the metal within the PCB surface) adn if that doesnt work, i'll unsolder the audio jacks and cut off the leads that were grounded. Thank you all for your input. i'll update this thread with my successes for archival purposes.

YAY! my method worked! i simply ground off the PCB's copper with a rounded dremel drillbit. but be sure to stay away from crucial leads, 'cause cutting one may result in audio/usb failure, and you'd have to solder your own wire to the leads. In the picture below are two arrows pointing to the places i cut off to separate the ground from USB to audio, yet still keeping the ground from the jacks to the audio header. so, both circuits are separate now, and i have noiseless audio! (i've even tested it by putting a USB device in it while i have the headphones attatched)

P.S. this is pretty good to be stickied. alot of ppl have this kind of problem with their antec 900 cases as well. this would be good for them to see!
