Anyone else have SLI 470's with an older Quad? - Page 2

c2q is about on par with AMD and both will get mauled badly by 470s in SLI in many games.

Its a good purchase before a cpu upgrade though, 470s are a lot of fun

So your telling me that a game that someone at 1680x1050 can max out, someone at 1920x1200 wont be able to? lul. If anything the cards are bottlenecked by the lower resolution.

First off, you really need to learn a little bit more about computers and graphics cards.

now let me learn you something.

The lower the resolution, the less it uses the GPU and the more it uses the CPU. The higher the resolution, the more it uses the GPU and less it uses the CPU.

that is why benchmarks geared toward CPU performance run at super low resolutions, and ones for the video card, run at really high resolutions.

Yeah and?

If he has a higher resolution with a lower CPU and slightly better graphics cards how will that not let him to max out the game?

Jesus christ.

The video cards are rendering the screen no matter what. But the video cards only have to render a small portion of pixels compared to the higher resolution. The only reason he couldn't max out crysis would be because of bottlenecking on the CPU.
My 5770 can max out crysis without AA at 1920x1080.

Where are you going with this? Your just spouting irrelevant information.

You're telling me that a non CPU dependent, heavily GPU dependent game will fail because of a 3.6 quad? Stop trolling.

Especially with putting more load on the cards at 1920x1200.

Wrong, right there.

The lower the resolution, the LESS you'll use GPU power, that is correct.

The higher the resolution, the MORE you'll use GPU power. The CPU usage will generally stay very close to the same. CPU is USUALLY going to be processing physics and loading textures and stuff into the GPU.

If you're comparing 1680x1050 to 1080p, the CPU difference is going to be minimal. 800x600 to 1080p...1080p is still going to need more CPU over 800x600, but by a good margin now because the textures will likely be a lot larger at 1080p.

Anyway, to answer the OP:
I predict the only game you'll have issues with will be GTA IV, and MAYBE Metro2033. Crysis, you should max without issues...with mods. You'll be bottlenecking the SLI setup slightly. But the increase in performance will outweigh the slight bottleneck due to the older architecture.

You made a fine choice on your upgrade.

You will notice the second GTX 470 in most games with your Q6600 OC'ed, however it will be a severe bottleneck. I had a Q9550 @ 3,9GHz and 2 470s for a few months, but only since I got this i7 I could unleash the full potential of these cards.

You should definately get that second 470 while you can still get it (for cheap?), but do note that there will be a lot of room left if you decide to get a faster CPU. A Phenom II X6 or X4 will not be sufficient either.

In Crysis, don't expect to see a lot of performance increase from the second 470. In my case the i7 made the difference, it's actually smooth now and has maxed out GPU usage just as Just Cause 2 and BF BC2

I don't want to discourage you, but even 4GHz will be hard on X38 with a Q9550. Remember that you'll need a board that can do 471 FSB in order to get 4GHz and around 500 FSB to get 4,2GHz. I'd just save up for an i5 or Bulldozer, the Q9550 isn't worth it anymore IMO. I know the Q9550 an easy and cheap solution for you though......

I found with my old Q9450 @ 3.5 i was getting around 50-60% gpu usage @ 1920x1200, everything on max in BC2. But with my new SB i52500k chip at 3.3 (stock) i was getting abit more gpu usage.

But at 4.5 on this chip its always above 90%, i would imagine so with the i7 SB.

Id say do the upgrade in the summer its soo worth it, you notice the psyhics are different too GL!
