Also, for Lightning, I can't seem to get it to sync with my Google Calendar account? Went into options but couldn't find it there. Hiding somewhere else?
Yes, you would set it up using IMAP instead of POP. IMAP is a push system whereas POP checks on regular intervals.
Also, with IMAP, any changes you make to the mail happens real-time on the server as well. You read a message, it's marked as read on the server. You delete a message, same thing. Using IMAP can be sluggish though because it downloads messages real-time each time you open the client or check different folders. There is an option to save client-side with IMAP, like POP does, by going to Account Settings...->Synchronization & Storage> and then ticking "Keep messages for this account on this computer." Now you have copies saved on your computer in case you ever don't have internet for whatever reason, and it will make navigating through things on the client as quick as with POP.
Thunderbird has tags, but those don't sync with Gmail labels in any way, so I just use the browser Gmail. I just leave Thunderbird running in the tray, like I said, so I have the offline copies of my email if I ever need them and to get the calender alerts.
