i've been getting some packet loss recently

Thread Starter

what are some things i should try doing? i'm doing a malwarebyte scan right now of my system. it's not my sister's system because i disconnected and tried pingtest. the modem and router seem to be functioning well. could it be the ISP? i've never really had problems with optimum.

btw this was the best test, the two before it were like 14% packet loss and 40ms jitter.

here's a tracert

Just ran it on my system:

Now to try to figure out this issue.

Have you ran this test many times? Or just once?
I just ran it twice, once on the Brooklyn server and once in some Connecticut server. The Connecticut server i received 4% packet loss, the Brooklyn one none.
As its such a low percentage, I would say its within the margin of error.

Anyway, if you're really concern about the problems, a few quests.
Are you getting this on many different computers? Or just your computer?
Tryin to figure it out as can't really understand with the sister's system added in there.

I see you're a Optimum customer like me, I can only give you some suggestions as to what happened with our setup.
My line last year would disconnect randomly and with ping tests through CMD i was getting 9/10 packet losses. The Optimum support guy spoke with on the phone ran a line integrity test for us, and found we were losing lots of packets from their servers to our modem.

They sent a technician out to us to take a look at our cable wires outside, then took a look at the network inside. He found that our Cable Modem was quite old (its one we got back in 2003) and some of the line/splitters we were using weren't up to par so to speak with his words.

Prob just lack of shielding and wearing down (We had these lines pulled along the floor since 1998 lol)

He switched the cable modem, swapped some lines and installed some new headers/extenders for us.
Fixed our packet problem right away.

Nice tech too, could've just ignored us as it was our internal wiring and had nothing to do with him, or charges us for a "false run" so to speak.
But he stripped the bad parts of the wire, connected the replacements, and did a full test for us. Ended up giving him $20 bucks tip lol

Go into a game with lagometre (cod4, black ops, css, anything like that, BC2 doesn't have lagometre).

If there are alot of red bars in the green part of the lagometer, that is packet loss. red line means 1 dropped packet. 4% packet loss should be crazy. Also, check pings on online games.

I don't have cable, but I do have DSL and I have my DSL modem set in bridged mode with my router. My router stores the username/password to log on my internet connection. You may want to try that out. BTW hop 2 being 7ms seems a bit high to me. My internal network is always 1ms or <1ms. Perhaps the cable between the router and the cable modem needs replaced? Problems at one hop can cause packet loss a couple of hops later.

you think so?

i'll try a different cable, however pingtest seems to show no packet loss now
