And how does this have anything to do with the CPU/platform being AMD. For gods sake.

It doesn't? I have the 890GX platform.
I couldn't get Windows or the Nvidia driver setup to see the card, even with driversweeper,Nvidia setup kept stopping at "Could not find compatible Nvidia hardware" until I reformatted and reinstalled the OS.
Moar cores!

You were just quoting a sentence that claimed that AMD GPUs work better on AMD platforms which isn't the case. Basically it should be all the same for the GPU which platform it's on. I think I made my point already.

OP as I stated before I believe the 460 768mb would be the best card paired with your cpu.

Here is a review of cpus using a single 6970.

In every game tested the Phenom II cpus are a bottleneck to a single 6970.

Again, the 460 overclocked is going to be more than enough for your current setup, enjoy it.

5-10FPS less? Depending on the game it keeps up with a i7 950.
I wouldn't call that a bottleneck by any means.

Are mathematics really that hard?

For all we know the lower clocked Intel chips could also be bottlenecking.

However we do know for sure that at 3.6GHz ($190) the 975 isn't going to gain much more headway with overclocking. The same can not be said of the lower clocked Intel chips with higher overclocking headroom.

If you want me to do the math for you Heavy just let me know.

Yeah, really nice of you to insult me for pointing out the truth yet again.
The lower end Intel chip dosn't have much more headroom than the high binned X4 975 that can do 4.2Ghz easily,i'm talking air cooling here for both systems. 3-15FPS is no noticeable difference for anyone, until you whip out useless charts and graphs.

The lower end cpu is bottlenecking more than the higher end Intel chip.

See how easy it was for me to say that? The point of this thread is the OP is aware of the limitations of his AMD cpu and is not looking to spend more money on a GPU than hes going to get back from it performance wise.
*Sigh*
You're still comparing clock for clock on 2 completely different processors.

Why suggest the 768 MB version of the 460 when the 460 1 GB doesn't cost that much more?

If his 460 1GB is "bottlenecked," it is fine. The 768 MB frame buffer will become another bottleneck. Might as well get the faster 1 GB version.

Just assuming hes playing at 1080p or less. When I can barely force over 1GB ram usage in SLI with 8x super samp and 32Q I don't think his card is going to be able to push enough AA and detail to require 1gb.

Either way the 460 1gb or 768mb is fine. However the extra ram/bus/bandwidth may not really be worth the $25-$40 price difference.
