What to buy HD5870 2gb or HD6590 2gb

Thread Starter
After weeks and weeks of checking forums, reviews and ATI driver discussions i simply can't decide which card to buy:

GIGABYTE GV-R5876P-2GD-B
(thats a HD5870 2gb)

or

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6950 2GB

It can get both cards for about 210 Euros.

Right now i am using a HD4770 pcs so of course both cards will be a boost to my system (Asrock A770 Crossfire board, Phenom II X4 940, 460 Watt Coba 80+ Power Supplx (i wonder if that is sufficient).

I hear (s******) the 6950 can get a bit loud. Now that could be a deciding factor if the 6950 isn't that much more powerful.

Ah and in case your wondering about to 2gb, i want to use Texture mods, especially NMC Texture Mod (total max possible) for Fallout 3.

Thx

olafolaf

6950 2Gb, not only is it newer but it also has the ability to unlock to a 6970 2GB. The cards would sound about the same audibly. But the 6950 (and especially when unlocked to a 6970) would be better than the 5870. 2GB is a good idea to get, I often reach the limit of my cards VRAM and 2GB is a nice frame buffer to have. You never want to reach the limit because your FPS will drop significantly when its hit.

You think unlocking is still possible? Did Sapphire keep that feature? I thought AMD was happy with unlock for initial sells but removed the option later.

So long as you make sure you get a reference V1 6950 it will unlock like 99% of the time, Sapphire I think have stopped making the reference one but can you give me the serial code/number. It should have something at the end that will tell you what version it is.

here is a thread on unlocking the 6950:

Thank you for your answers by the way, i am in a consumerist fever and forgot to be polite, haha smile.gif
Its really a rollercoaster right now, wanted to buy a Oki Printer b431d but prices have skyrocketed (+80%!!!). If you ever need a cheap-in-the-long run printer it would be THE best.

BUT BACK TO GPUs:

It's this one Hd6950 2gb:

Sapphire 11188-00-40R

Oh great, that reduces my fever a lot. The one i posted is on ebay for only 209 Euros immediate and i was affraid to loose it to someone else, haha.

Put please, people, keep commenting, i am still not so sure. I won't use eyefinity EVER, that's the only certainty right now, but texture mods in abundance (i repeat myself here so you folks need not scroll up.)

Again my concern with the COBA Power Supply 460 Watts 80+.
I am looking for more details about that one to inform you better, but
would your first impression be its enough? I read the 5870 2gb could take
so the 6950 will too, huh?

The HD 6950 2GB consumes less power in idle (18W/19W) and under full load (182W/212W) than the 5870. I think your system with a new video card will be pushing your 460W PSU quite a bit. I advise getting a good quality 550W PSU or the like.

Yeah I highly suggest you get a new powersupply, that is not good quality and will not power a new graphics card.

One of those should do you nicely. I would go with any 600+w PSU from: XFX, SeaSonic, Corsair and some of Antec's PSU's

As for the 2GB Vram, I said before that I use up to 1024mb (my limit) with texture mods and other things in Crysis, Some games like starcraft 2 get close to the 1Gb limit but won't ever hit it. The 2GB models of the 6950 are the only ones that will unlock and that extra frame buffer is definitally worth it if you use texture mods/custom textures.
BTW; I suggest you fill out your system specs in the control panel: http://www.overclock.net/specs.php?do=addsystem
