i5 2500k Thermaltake Frio idles at 45! Why?

Thread Starter
I've just got my new build, and it's been a nightmare.

Not only am I suffering from the P8P67 double post issue, but I'm also experiencing unusually high temps at idle.

I've read that with the Frio I should be seeing temps of around 28c at idle, but I reach 44 at bootup. The fans are running high almost the entire time.

I didn't build the computer myself.

What is causing these high temps? Could it be a poor connection between the CPU and the heatsink - would I have to tighten some screws? My ambient temps are around 20c.

Could it be a poor application of thermal paste?

This issue is beginning to really annoy me, and I can't contact the guy who built the computer because of the Easter holidays.

Any help would really be appreciated.

could be anything u mentioned. Could be a bug got squished in between, could be anything.

this type of thing is so vague when diagnosing.learn to go do it yourself if u want it fixed asap. plenty of vids on youtube, and unless you're derp, you wont have a problem.

tried clearing cmos to fix double post?

what are your voltages. there's so much that can factor into temps. case? airflow?

at 20c ambients, it's less likely to be the case/airflow.

Everything is at stock. I haven't altered anything.

I'll go check the voltage now. As far as I recall it may have been around 1.150.

Ambient room temps are 20c.

Anything you can do to cool it down temporarily (like take the side panel off and hold a fan over the heatsink or something). It could be a stuck sensor.

If its not that, I'd say remount with new thermal paste though

Also, regarding the double post, I'm using the latest BIOS, 1503.

Can the double post cause damage to my harddrive?

pop the top and undo the 4 screws that hold the heat sink on and see if he put anything there.

In regards to the sensor, the Frio was mounted so as to exhaust out the top of the case -South to North.

I'm not sure if this would have an effect on the sensors.

Also, it heats up pretty quickly. The ambient temps are 23c, yet as soon as I hit the BIOS the cpu temps hit 44c and stay there.

I opened up the case to see if everything was screwed down properly. As far as I can tell it seems fine.

No, double post will not damage any hard drive or SSD.

As of the temps, I also have a Thermaltake FrÃ*o, I run my fans at like 1800RPM (Close to Middle speed, I have a fan controller) and with an OC of 4.8Ghz HT ON 1.328v I get about 35-38ºC iddle on a room temperature of around 23-24ºC, and at load with Folding@Home I get about 69-71ºC.

What are your temperatures on load using for example Prime 95?

Edit:

Add your system to your profile:

http://www.overclock.net/specs.php?do=addsystem

Then we could help you out better

Do you measure the temperature on BIOS? Or in Windows?

Measure it in Windows with Core Temp or Real Temp, for some reason I think BIOS temperature gives a wrong temperature, maybe the motherboard temperature, I also get a lot higher temps in BIOS for some reason than at Windows, so I think the BIOS temp display is wrong.
