Should I got past 3.8GHz on 955 BE revision C3? - Page 3

You will need to set up a "custom" Cool-n-Quiet profile through third party software. I used PhenomsTweaker to set custom voltages and multi at each p-state. It will take a bit of playing around to get the right voltages set, but it is definitely worth the effort!

I'm a bit confused as to what frequency you're currently running at though. In your title you state 3.8, in your post you state 3.6, but in your sig rig you state 4.0 o.O Either way, I really recommend lowering your voltage from 1.550, it is definitely not healthy for the long run regardless of temps :/
post #22 of 79
Nice chip-don't worry abusing it,they can take it if you keep the volts under 1.6v.Often times you can get better results by raising your reference clock and lowering the cpu multiplier.Of course you have to adjust your NB,HTT and RAM too.

The problem would be that it would be unusual for that to be stable on a deneb chip. I don't remember many people getting that stable 24/7, most of the chips seem to top out around 2700. Is your ram 2x4 or 4x2? Also, 1.55v seems a bit much. None of my 9x5 phII's required over 1.51 for 4.0.

Yes, Just about 5 min ago I found some stuff saying the C'n"Q stop's after 3.6Ghz. I think I have found why I'm having a stability issue.

ALL my bios setting except CoreVolts,DRAMVolts and DRAM timings are set at auto in my bios. Should I go though and set each one to the "proper" value? or will the "auto" setting's be fine for most of it?

I've been reading all night, and it seems that 3.8-3.9GHz is the standerd "wall" when OC'ing 955BE's. I made an attept to set BIOS as per Willibj's recomendation's and stopped about half way though, to many things set at auto lol. I'll play with it more and report back...I'll have a 4.0 stable rig for sure I'm hooked! lol, thanks for your time and helps guys+rep

When I made the thread it was stable at 3.6 and 1.400Vcore, I'm sure I could get it lower but set it at 1.400 just to test, was going to drop down as needed.
Reason I asked if I should go past 3.8 in this thread is I'm a total noob, I know nothing about how much these chips can take for long term useage, Wasnt sure if 3.8 would fry it by the end of the week or if it would hold for 5+ years. Anyhow I set it at 3.8 and it was stable, I'm at 3.8Ghz now, no problems. as for the sig rig saying 4.0, when I set it there, it held prime the first time for 2 hours, so I took it as Stable, and changed my sig rig accordingly, As soon as I changed the sig rig to 4.0 instability's hit left and right, forgot to change the sig rig doing it now.

I'm using Two of these kits. Or I have 1 2 gig stick in each DIMM if you dont click. My mobo wouldnt recongnize the DRAM timings at 8-8-8-21, when I set it there manualy it was instable, Gskill guys asked me to bump up DRAM Voltage to make sure the ram wasnt DOA. His recomendation was 1.55 instead of 1.5v. Somthing about having to have a tad more voltage when using Full DIMM's? was perfectly stable at 1.56 as my setting allow +/-0.02v.

As for the CoreVoltage being set to 1.55v. That was the Max Safe voltage as far as I know, so I put it there just to hit 4.0, as soon as it was stable I planned to back it down bit by bit, to refine my OC. didnt Want to mess with not having enough voltage, and to my knoledge 1.55 shouldnt hurt anything as long as its only there for a short time

Thank you guys for input! Learning alot! I would like to learn the basic's of OC on this AMD, so when I build my sandy bridge(in a few months) i'll know more of what im doing

For now, turn Cool and quiet off, virtualization off, also turn spread spectrum off.You should check out our thread here for general AM3 overclocking to get a good understanding of what you need to change in the bios.
http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/28...ing-guide.html
remember your motherboard has LLC,which adjusts your CPU vcore. It can cause your vcore to go higher than you set it in bios,so make sure you check what "actual" voltage is while running. For instance if you set vcore to 1.51v-you may see as much as 1.61v while running,so check it with CPUz.Iv'e found a LLC setting of around 33% helps when overclocking.

On my board(Crosshair IV), CnQ is multi related. Works up to x18.5max, even @4GHz+.
Dont remember on Crosshair III, 790 chip like yours,(might be x18.5 too),but I can tell you for sure that 955 didn't like CPU/NB @ 2600+ with CnQ enabled.
So, i used to run it @ 4GHz(250 x16) , CPU/NB @ 2500, CnQ enabled
On Crosshair IV, same 955 @ 4GHz, CPU/NB @ 3000, CnQ enabled
Also on CH IV, the CPU needed less voltage for 4GHz. 1.465V vs. 1.525V on CH III, at full load

I keep all voltages on AUTO, but CPU volt., CPU/NB volt., RAM volt.
Good luck with your OC. You have a very good cooler, I hope will help you to hit your targets!!

Four sticks of memory aren't going to make this any fun. If it was mine I would try.

CnQ disabled
SS disabled
CPU 1.525v
CPU-NB 1.35v
NB 1.20v
CPU 20x200
CPU-NB 13x200
HT 10x20

and if it fails Prime, where it failed. If it fails on small fft I would pop out two sticks of RAM temporarily and run again same specs.

I was about to ask if I should remove one of my RAM kits for the OC'ing. I plan on replacing my current ram with a 2*4gig kit, so I can keep 8 gigs but not have full DIMMS. Am I correct on this?
