HDD not being recognized?

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
Yesterday, I added a Samsung F3 1.5TB drive to my computer, and was able to to get it running (copying files from other drives, changing locations in Windows 7, etc). Today, it's not being recognized, regardless of the port it's in.

Any theories? o-o;

I had a similar problem, and mine stemmed from the fact that I had 3 HDDs that were all the same manufacturer/brand.

Are the drives recognized on boot up? If so, see if they are also present in Windows Disc Management software (in the start menu just search "disc management" and click on the one that says "create or format hard disc partitions." If it is recognized there you might have to mount the drive as active or change the volume label.

Nope, the drive in question is not recognized on boot up.

There are two currently installed, both F3's xD

Okay, that is most likely your problem (My brand is also Samsung). My motherboard has 3 different sata controllers, I had to plug each of my 3 different hard drives into a different sata controller and that fixed the problem for me.

Just for testing, you could try to unplug your first HDD and see if the bios recognizes the others, and then you will know that it's not a problem with the harddrive but rather conflicts. I'll look for a way to get two of the same hard drives on the same sata controller.

Actually, I think I found your problem. It's a conflict problem on your motherboard type specifically. Samsung has released a fix. Check out this link:

Does it come up in the BIOS?

If not then your drive needs a firmware update. The F3s have a problem with SB850 and P67/H67 chipsets.

My solution was to put it into the SATA II ports, since it's using a separate controller from SB850. But it seems that isn't the case for you.
