Rooting process is kinda hard-ish for an Inspire 4G. But XDA has very thorough procedures here and here. Just pick your preferred method and then proceed to install a new ROM.

It's nearly impossible to brick as long as you don't mess up while updating the radio No need to change the radio for the most part.

Otherwise, you'll always have access to the bootloader and ClockworkMod recovery which will allow to you reflash the ROM

Rooting used to be complicated but someone developed a GUI program to do it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406
