Opinion on loop

Thread Starter
Have built more rigs than I can remember over the last 25+ years, including several water-cooled although my last WC was probably 5 years ago.

Getting ready to setup a loop in my current (in my sig) rig. I am ONLY cooling 3 Sapphire 6970's - nothing else at this point.

My loop consists of:

XSPC 750
3/8" ID Tubing
240 EK XT Radiator mounted inside top of my HAF x w/ 2 x Yate Loon 120 mm (approx 50 CFM).
3 x EK V2 6970 water blocks
EK Triple bridge (serial).

I am not planing on overclocking the cards - just cant stand the noise of the stock fans over 40%.

Does this seem adequate for the vid cards?

I'd get a thick 360 rad if you can, though for a stock clocks/temps not important, setup the 240 will work. I'd go with an XSPC RX series rad pretty much the same thing but slightly better performer. A Swiftech MCR-320 is a good choice too if your constrained on a budget.

Personally I'd go for 7/16" tubing over 1/2" barbs clampless, but that's personal preference.

Edit: Blocks and bridge are great choices

Appreciate the advice!

I will see how things go with the XT240 - though its not quite as thick as the XSPC RX (48 mm vs. 58 mm), the FPI are close - 10 vs. 8.

I am also leaving the top 200 mm fans pulling and mounting the yate loons in push configuration.

I am guessing even with the 240 I should see substantially lower temps than the stock coolers. At idle - the hottest card hits about 40C - at load with the fans set at 40% the hottest card hits between 85 and 90 C. Bumping fans to 50% (almost unbearable noise) might get it down to 80-85.

If it turns out its still a bit warmer than my liking I will pop for a 360 as you suggest and do a little adjusting to get it to fit - or maybe add a second radiator if I can find a reasonable place to mount it.

Thanks again!

Well - I decided to go ahead and purchase a 360 Rad. Went with the EK 360 XT since it should mount identically to the XT 240 I already have - just need to move the Optical Drive and XSPC reservoir down a few bays.

Can't imagine it would have any issues cooling the 3 6970's, even with slight overclock. Should have it up by this weekend.

lol, too late I guess, if you arent OCing, a 240 will be fine, the coolant will simply reach a higher temp, and GPU can run hotter anyway.

you might also find the flow a tad lacking split 3 ways, but since the cards should be set in parallel anyway pressure shouldnt be an issue.

I'd always stuff the biggest rad you can possibly fit in there. I'm cooling 3 with a 480 and the temps are good for me. I couldn't go back to a 360, no way.

tsm106 - are you cooling just the 3 Graphics cards with that 480 or is your CPU in the loop as well?

Gpu only on the 480 via a 35x. The TI DrMOS revised card runs a lil cooler than the Volterra card, so you'll have that on your side. Running 3 of these cards off a 240 only is crazy imo.

Well - finished the setup and my results are better than I thought. With just the internally mounted EK 360 Rad and using a Serial Bridge - my 3x6970's are running 42 C at full load (ran Unigine as well as played about 30 minutes of BFBC2) and 20-24 idle.

The 240 would have easily been adequate for my setup compared to OEM. On OEM air cooling with the fans set to 40% I would get to 90-95 C at load. AT 50% it would drop to 80-85 C, so I realized a solid 40-45 C drop by going to WC on a single 360 Radiator. Definitely pleased though now I have an unused 240 I guess I can sell...or maybe add that in the future for the CPU.
