Best cooler for a 2600K for less than $60?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,
My 2600K is going to be here in the middle of this week, and I'll be putting my new build together. I've also got an Asus Sabertooth P67, and I was just recently told that my current heatsink (Xigmatek HDT-S1283) is not compatible at all with LGA 1155, so I need a new heatsink for my i7. I was hoping you guys could give me some recommendations for something less than $60. I was thinking of going for the Xigmatek Dark Knight, as it's currently $50 on Newegg with a $20 rebate (seen here), but I thought I'd ask you guys since I know you could steer me in a good direction.
Thank you.
-Dan

If you want retail, Coolermaster's Hyper 212+ is a great cooler for the price. $30 ($20 if you find it on sale), and your 2600K will hit 4.6GHz nicely.

Scythe Mugen 2. It's $40 and gives tremendous performance. It can handle a 2600K at 1.4V at 4.8-5GHz with temps. of 65C.

With a Cooler Master Hyper 212+ you're gonna see temps. higher than 70C at those volts.

Hmm...I e-mailed Xigmatek and they replied and told me to consult this:

http://www.xigmatek.com/product.php?productid=92

I'm not sure what they were getting at, but I'm assuming they mean this will make my current cooler work with my 2600K. Does anyone know if it will? Also, thanks for the feedback so far.

Exactly. With that bracket, which is $9.99 shipped from Newegg, you can mount your current 1283 on the 1156 socket.

*EDIT* This is the correct bracket for the 3 pipe design. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-038-_-Product The other is for the 4 pipe design.

I was going to post this very thing had Xigmatek not told you it. The Dark Knight is simply the same cooler you already have but it's nickel plated and comes with that bracket included. You can get the bracket separately from $10, as noted, for your current one. I'm using a bracket like that I got separately for $10 only it's for LGA775 (the cooler works with LGA775 by default, but with push-pins, which I didn't want).

The bracket I posted is actually this one, which is currently out of stock:

Just not sure what I should do...I can get a Silver Arrow used for about $60 (what koven linked to), but if my old cooler will be just fine, I don't see a need to buy a new one. Hmm...

The installation will make you want to tear the thing apart though.
The trick to installation is to compress each spring with your fingers and twist the screw in manually with your other hand until it's mated to the back plate. Don't use a screwdriver for the compression or you run the risk of board damage if you slip. After it's in use the wrench and tighten until you can't do it anymore.

Remember also that the cooler should install like you do wheel nuts- go across the CPU for the first two screws. It will also make compressing the springs to fit a bit easier. I'd do one on the back, then one under the fan, then the other one on the back, then the other one under the fan.

If you have an easy way of pulling the fan off, do it. It's so much easier if you do that.
