My soldering iron broke.... I need a new one

Thread Starter
I got a 15w pencil soldering iron from Radio shack and I went to use it *used it only 3 times* the damn thing was broken. Flipped the switch and it didn't heat up. Took it apart and the wires had melted off the heating element... e-e

I do a lot of repairs and solder work (everything from fixing caps on motherboards to just fooling around with stuff) and I need a decent 15w pencil soldering iron.

I was looking at this one:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WM120-120v-Pencil-Soldering/dp/B0000WT586"]Amazon.com: Weller WM120 12w/120v Pencil Thin Soldering Iron: Home Improvement[/ame]

It seems like a good one (and is made by a good brand). Thing is plent for what the small things I do all the time (and I got a 30w for whatever else I have).

Thoughts?

www.dealextreme.com has a large selection of solder irons, only problem is that shipping takes about 3 weeks.

Well personally I would say that you should get yourself a good soldering station with temp control. You will find that it makes life a lot easier for doing repairs.
Just make sure to get a couple of spare tips for it when you buy one and a couple of different size tips to make things easier.
The amount of control and power from a station is well worth it. I use one almost everyday for things from fixing wiring to building circuit boards.
Here us a relatively inexpensive one that works fine:

http://www.circuitspecialists.com/prod.itml/icOid/10369

or if you are on a name brand kick, look for a weller station but be prepared to spend around $100 for a good one.

Also here is a Hako which is a fine station. I have a 936 and love it.

I'm a big fan of the Weller WLC100. Difference from the one you picked out is that it has voltage adjustment and it comes with its own stand.

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WLC100-Soldering-Hobbyist--Yourselfer/dp/B000AS28UC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303694117&sr=8-1"]Amazon.com: Weller WLC100 Soldering Station for Hobbyist and Do-It-Yourselfer: Home Improvement[/ame]

I've had one for a few years and no problems. Much better than the Radioshack one I used to own.

A Weller soldering iron/pencil is an investment. I went through a couple of cheaper units from Rad Shack etc. after I lost my good Weller in a move and the grief and aggravation drove me nuts. The money I invested in another Weller was one of the best expenditures I've made in the past couple of years.

Weller is great if you can make the jump money wise, my dad has a 100W gun thats probably older than i am, so close to 40 years and still running, and i think only one element replaced. Of course with 100W even i dont use it that much. How ever, i think you just got a dud, ive been using that same pencil iron for close to 10+ years with a few drops included.
