Overclocking Pentium4 660

Thread Starter
Can I overclock my pentium 4 660 running at 3.60 ghz to 4 ghz?
I have it overclocked to 3.77 right now and my ram settings are set to AUTO so my memory bus speeds are around 840mhz, but when I overclock past 3.8 the memory crashes and I get blue screened. When I lower my overclocking it solves the memory issue and the comuter boots no problem.

I'm playing Resident evil 5 on Max Settings but my CPU bottlenecks the visuals from my video card. The crowds, explosions and controls lag a bit but when I overclock the CPU it seems this issue is slowly going away & I get better game play in No Mercy.

you need a very good cooler and some are very hard to o.c.
set mem to 667mhz
get celeron dual core at least

well im using this to get by for now. Intel lists this processor as handleing temps as high 70 C. Thats not the problem I'm having. i'll try to keep my memory at what it is then try to over-clock the processor by itself and see what happens.

Manually set your ram to 800MHz if you can, and just up the FSB. You'll get that overclock with no problems, just watch the tempretures

I was unable to lock in my FSB to 800mhz. I am able to lower the ratios...so when I increase the clock speed the FSB doesnt go so high. FSB is around 725mhz, Processor running at 3.905,. Thats all good for a partition I setup for gaming, I'm noticing good, smooth game play.
Problem now is I can not boot into another partition I setup for web, school, or light business purposes. I get as far as seeing the Windows Starting screen (for Win 7 64-bit-the P4 660 is a 64 bit processor)then the cpu auto re-boots then I'm back at seeing the BIOS then selecting Partitions. I also no longer see the error blue screen.

I have a Pentium 4 641. It's essentially the same CPU except it's 3.2GHz and 65nm, so it will run cooler then yours on average which is 90nm. I've gotten mine to 4.5GHz easily on the motherboard/RAM you see in my signature. I started having some real trouble ~4.75GHz and above.

Outside temperatures (what are you using to cool it?), I'd say that CPU should get much higher than you're seeing. I'm guessing the motherboard/RAM is limiting you. Since changing the ratio let you get higher, my guess is on RAM.

Are you giving things more voltage? It sounds unstable. I had the same thing happen when it started taking it beyond 4.5GHz where it's reboot during Windows loading. That usually is a clue of not enough voltage somewhere, usually to the CPU.

I'm using this small Cool Master HyperTX-3. I mounted another fan on the heat sink for increased air flow. I will see if I can increase the voltage on this cpu I dont know where to look, but I will start somewhere. From what I studied I should be able to get 4ghz with air cooling, anything beyond that I'm going to need a beefier cooling system.

I checked the BIOS. I didn't notice any option for inceasing the Voltage... its running at 3.3, I think the system is using 5 volts. I dont know what that means. But i do get what your saying. I'm using Wintec AMP-X memory-this thing has got a black heat sheild covering the whole stick. 1 stick = 2gb. I sent one in for a replacement this past Saturday. Their Located somewhere near San Francisco so it will be a couple of weeks before I get the other one back. I will try to look at MSI's website they might have an update or maybe another option for a download that will let me increase the voltage some.

From what I heard about Wintec. Their memory sux for overclocking, but see i got alot of other conflicting reviews about many other brands. I tried to get something that would work and be stable. That didn't turn out so well with Wintec because I was NOT overclocking when the brand new stick failed, my previous board was an Intel propietary board. So I will try to work with what I got.

I tried lowering the ratio for my memory again to see if it would work( I could boot into my other partitions) its not working.
i dont know what to do other then lower my cpu clock speed to around 3.78 or 3.83. PLaying RE5 is gonna suck, i just improved in No Mercy.
I also noticed the Blue Screen pops up and restarts the PC on my other Partition and when I try to boot into Win XP 32 bit, I see a black screen with a white bar...then it freezes indefinitely.
