It wasn't until the ATI 4 series of cards (or maybe 3 series, I don't know) that they actually started doing really well with ATI, and the 5 series was great no doubt. My point was the acquisition of ATI at the time did nothing but hurt AMD. They rode out the K8 architecture by making tweaks to it for too many years, while Intel is leaps and bounds ahead of them in the segment I most care about: desktop CPU. This is not a "fanboy" opinion, but rather fact. If they wouldn't have bought ATI, who knows what would've happened? I would've liked to see AMD compete more, especially in low power segments and smartphones or something now. It is rumored one of the reasons Dir Meyer was ousted was for his lack of having any plans for tablets. You can't just ignore platforms that are taking off.
I would think the bod would have every bit as large a role in that mess as the CEO.

TBH, that sounds like allot to demand for from AMD. First you say they are behind on desktop cpu's, now dumb niche tablets? I'd rather they focus on CPU's and GPU's for desktops and not giant phones that can't make phone calls.

fanboyism for people who build their own computers? (Intel vs AMD) (NVIDIA vs AMD). There are plenty of fanboys in 6990 and GTX 590 thread, unless they arent fanboys in your opinion.

Also people who build their own computers are a minority vs people who purchase already built computers, so my statement would be valid.

I think tablets are a dumb niche too, but like I said you can't ignore platforms that are taking off. That's where a large amount of the money is, whether you or I like to use them is irrelevant. Just imagine a "what-if" scenario where AMD didn't buy ATI. They could've potentially focused on faster processors and competing in the other aforementioned segments. ATI could've went on developing chipsets and graphics cards too.

Again, I'd like to reiterate I am not a fanboy to any side. AMD chips offer great performance for the money, and the 5 series of cards from them were a game changer. From an enthusiast standpoint, I would've liked to see AMD compete better from socket 939 onward. It is just my opinion that it was a bad decision for the merger. Long term it seemed to pan out well, as you can see the success of the 4, 5 and 6 series of video cards. Even Phenom II has good market share, so maybe that was the way to go. Though I would've loved to have a Phenom II FX CPU that offered extreme performance, but since that wasn't available at the time I was upgrading, the 920 was the only choice I had from a performance standpoint.

Agreed. AMD has enough to handle with catching up in the CPU market, and keeping a lead with their GPU market.

AMD could have possibly competed with their 939 socket onward, but after buying ATI they were most likely short on money for a while. It is also possible that Bulldozer is what Phenom II was supposed to be,though due to delays and not enough R&D to produce it quickly enough,AMD had to work with tweaking Phenom I into Phenom II instead.

Uh, I thought it was a gamble that paid off. They nearly bankrupted themselves over the purchase and acquisition until ATi starting making money.

I don't think it was a fanboy statement at all. If you compare a quad core Phenom II to Core2Quad, they're very similar in performance clock for clock. I'm not blatantly making up information or anything. With the X6s, obviously AMD will do better in applications that take use of more threads. Bring in Sandy Bridge into the equation (especially for single threaded apps or apps that utilize 4 or less cores), and

For the tablet part, they would at least generate some revenue from it. In developing the tablet chips, they would have the ability to better develop other low power designs since they would be familiar with similar architecture development.
