I was thinking of getting a Sony point and shoot.

Personally, I think the Sony H55 and Panasonic ZS5 are better cameras for the price. Manual settings + better IQ.

I think Nikon coolpix takes better shots.

Depends on which model you're talking about. Some take good shots, some take absolutely horrid shots. When you say "Nikon Coolpix", you're talking about a whole line of cameras, not one specific model.
