High pitched noise during Furmark 1.9.0

Thread Starter
Hello everyone. I have an ASUS GTX 460 768MB running on a [see system sig]. I absolutely love the card, but there is one thing that concerns me:

Whenever I run a benchmark program, I hear this high pitched, quick-pulsating noise. It only occurs when the graphics card is under full load and I only hear it during a hardcore benchmark like Furmark. Notably when the 'fur-doughnut' is closest to the screen (I guess when the most detail has to be rendered). In fact, it will get quieter and louder depending on how much detail it's rendering.

I also hear the noise (not as noticeable) when my GPU is folding. Is this normal? It doesn't seem to be effecting the card, as it benchmarks around where it should be. If it's just a by-product of high GPU load then it's fine as it's not bothering me..just worrying me.

Thanks guys!

This is coil whine. It's completely normal when your GPU is under heavy load.

It's called coil whine and it's perfectly safe and normal, but annoying.

Screaming caps. Most likely GPU since your PSU is mostly likely not under full load. I've had it too on my EVGA 8800GT during hardcore CUDA or video stress.

Don't know if you can really RMA for such an issue. It didn't kill my card over a two year span, so it shouldn't kill yours.

If you really want to get rid of it, talk to LethalRise750. He apparently got rid of his coil whine:

Quote:
I had an old 8800 card that did this, I took some Clear Acrylic Nail Polish and covered the Inductors, Chokes and Capacitors in it. It completely removed it.

It could also be a ups if you are running one. If you overload your ups it will make a long beep sound telling you it cannot recharge the battery.

Hey thanks guys, Rep+ for y'all. While it doesn't really bother me I wonder if I can get rid of it w/o covering powered components with nail polish...

Aftermarket performance VGA coolers normally cover the entire board with a thermal block, and the chokes, capacitors, inductors, and CPU are covered with thermal paste. I wonder if that would dampen it?
