Advice on parts

Thread Starter
I'm pretty new to watercooling but I sleep in the same room as my computer and I run a program that caclulates things and keeps my GPU at ~50% fan. I would like to water cool it, and maybe my cpu to keep the noise down in my room and also maybe overclock my GPU.

The GPU in question is an Sapphire 6950/70.
The CPU is an AMD3 socket cpu.

I was wondering if it would be possible to cool them for under ~170-200$.

I was thinking of trying to use an heater core as a rad but I don't know how much heat they can take.

Thanks,
Caffeine.

Note: The cpu cooler I have is very slient, so cooling my CPU with water isn't too big of a issue.

You could do it on used parts, but not likely buying new. A full cover graphics card cooler is $85 cheapest (I just bought one for my 6950 from jab-tech.com for $90 shipped), a pump by itself usually costs around $50-105 (I'd recommend killing 2 birds with one stone inexpensively with the XSPC X2O 750 Dual 5.25” Bay Reservoir Pump), then a radiator (At least a dense 120mm, preferably a 240mm) $40-$100, tubing, $16 Primochill primoflex from amazon, a decent 120mm fan (or two, depending on radiator) Yate-loon $5, and lastly barbs, $2.50x6 = $15

Total, basically bare minimum with single fan: $166

I would go at least 240mm radiator with fans on a controller, but you could get away with XSPC RX240 for $66, 2 Y-L fans all for like $180ish plus shipping....

Probably better off buying an aftermarket air cooler that is known for being quiet... Watercooling makes sense when you're replacing the cooling on more than one heat source usually.

Get a Rasa RS240 kit, then add a Razor 6970 block, then sell the Rasa cpu block. With the money from sale, you'll be under your max limit and have cash to spare for a 12 pack.

I found a MCP350 for like 40 USD.
I can get a 6970 waterblock for ~100 shipped.
I can get a heatercore for ~20
I figure a res and fittings won't cost too much.

I think I got it made now.

You'll spend more than you think you will going piece by piece and if that pump is a black impeller ddc1... eeew.

There is nothing wrong with the black impeller pumps actually. Martin210 has done a good deal of testing here in these forums to prove that.

If I had to choose between the black vs. blue, the black impeller pumps are not having the issues of buring up due to thermal problems as being reported in many of the OCing forums.
