Info: What is a Stepping/Revision

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter
A CPU silicon stepping is a specific revision of the silicon's maturation process. Since no processor design can be created perfectly there is a "version release" with the first version of a new microprocessor product being the A-0 step. Later, as improvements are made to the product for functional (bug) fixes or manufacturing improvements, the stepping number will increase and this is called a "revision". The higher the revision usually (but not always) equates to minor processor alterations that result in an increased number, (that is, A-1 to A-2) while more complex changes result in the letter being changed (that is, A-2 to B-0).

AMD has a CPU Stepping/Revision code as below:

Example: CAB2E

1st letter: "production/release code"

2nd letter: "core cache code"
A = unicore cpu, 1MB
B = unicore cpu, 512KB
C = dual core cpu, 2 X 1MB
D = dual core cpu, 2 X 512KB

3rd and 4th letters/numbers: "memory controller revision"
This follows incrementally with all letter of the alphabet and digits 1-9. 3rd letter increments as when running though all available 'steppings' duly noted by the 4th letter.

FX-55: XXA2X
FX-57: XXBNX
FX-57 (newer stepping)/FX-60: XXB2X
3700+ (newer stepping): XXB3X

And on...

5th letter: "revision code"
C = rev C (as in CG Clawhammers)
D = rev D (as in D0 for CBBID chips....)
E = rev E (as in the rev E 'San Diego' core)

And on...
