New build, what do you think?

Thread Starter
I just registered here today and I'm putting a new PC together for my wife. I just wanted to see what everyone here thought about this build or have any tips on how to improve it. I'm trying to keep it ~1000. I could possibly go to 1200 if there is something severely wrong here I'm not seeing. I looked around and it seems like the processor and mobo are just fine together.

Thanks for considering...

Better cooler, less money: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-065-_-Product
Runs cooler, and quieter, for $35 more: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121424
And maybe a full size motherboard instead of a micro since the case you have picked out is big enough. You might want to SLI in the future: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130240
Everything else looks pretty solid to me.

Sandy Bridge 2500k 3.4ghz quadcore w/ Xigmatek Gaia HSF
MSI P67A-C43 (B3) Motherboard
Gskill 2x2gb (4gb) DDR3 1600 CL8 RAM
Asus DirectCU GTX560ti
Seagate 1TB HDD
Lite-On DVDRW
Rosewill Challenger case (roomy, cable management, black interior, 3x case fans)
Antec TruePowerNew 650watt PSU
Asus 23" 1080p LED backlit LCD screen

This build has a better CPU (newer tech, faster, more efficient) and cooler (120mm fan), GPU (faster, newer and overclocks further), monitor (larger, sharper, brighter), RAM (faster and higher overclock headroom) and case (larger, more features, better cooling) than your build. The Sandy Bridge processor is newer tech. The motherboard only has support for 1 GPU unfortunately, and I wouldn't push the overclock to the extreme on it. But for the price there's nothing better out there.

If you're prepared to, you could add an SSD to the build to round it out. Very balanced, very fast.

Thanks so much for the prompt replies.

I will be doing a moderate overclock on the setup most likely, because I'm under a budget for the build, and I don't want any hiccups, which hopefully will not be a chore running 1 GPU.

I do understand the 560 over the 460, but I wasn't 100% sure that the sandy bridge was that much better than the lynnfield. From what I've read, the lynnfield can get up to ~3.6 under air.

The combo deal from newegg that you pointed out is, however, worth considering. I'm agreeing that for ~1000 your build is quite superior to the one I decided on.

I really do appreciate the advice

The i5 750/760 should easily hit 3.8-4ghz on fairly regular air-cooling.

The SandyBridge 2500k's have been hitting 4.5-4.8ghz on the same standard air cooling.

There's approximately a 30% increase in performance for SandyBridge clock for clock. That the SB will clock about 1ghz higher is just gravy.

I would prefer a slightly better motherboard and HDD in the combo deal I provided, but honestly for the money there's just no choice to be made. Nobody can guarantee you "no hiccups" but I can tell you that the components in the build, assuming they're fully functioning, will work together.

And you are more than welcome

I was just about to point out the same Hyper 212+ that Ramsey77 indicated. It's a great cooler, cheap too.

The build in general is very similar to one I helped my friend build a few months back, that motherboard is great on a budget but bear in mind that if you're using a dual slot GPU, it will cover the first PCI slot. Just in case you plan on using more than 1 PCI expansion card.

Other than that it looks great. A solid 600W PSU is more than enough to deal with that GTX560 if you feel like spending less.
