Expansion Possibilities.

Due to the limitations of the P67 chipset, I have to make some decisions. Which do you think will give me the best gameplay experience:

GTX 560 + GTX 460 (PHYSX) + Sound Card

2 GTX 560's SLI (No Dedicated PHYSX card) + Sound Card

2 GTX 560's SLI + GTX 460 (PHYSX) + Onboard Realtek sound (No dedicated sound)

I'm real set on keeping the P8P67 PRO, which unfortunately doesn't have a NF200.. The most power I can get with video is 2 GTX 560's 8x SLI and one 4x GTX 460 for PHYSX. And if I use the 3rd slot for PHYSX, the PCI-E 1X slot is disabled due to the bandwidth the other cards take up.

Tell me your thoughts, guys!
Thanks in advance!

Yea, I'm on a tight budget, so My current schedule is to:

Run a GTX 560 + GTX 460 (PHYSX) + Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio by May 14

Then sell the get the second GTX 560 and run it in SLI, sell the 460 for some extra $$$ by the end of July.

How much performance increase does a 560 have over a 460, I see people post bar graphs quite often, where do they come from?

I'd go with two 560s and a 460 for physx, but I haven't put a sound card in a PC in years.

Regardless, the two 560s with either sound card or physx card is better than 560/460/sound card.

At 1080p, there isn't much you're going to need extra muscle for even with physx enabled.

Mafia II, Mirror's Edge, Cryostasis, Batman AA can all be played at max settings without a dedicated physx card. Metro 2033 plays with AAA antialiasing and the rest at max.

Maybe get the two 560s, try them with the 460 as a physx card and then make your decision.

I liked the jump from 460 SLI to 560 SLI I made. I went from 768MB VRAM to 2GB VRAM at the same time, so ymmv a bit with a 1GB 560 but not much. The difference is very noticeable in gameplay experience.

Thanks for your feedback, PrimeBurn!

As some of my friends have told me, 2 560's in SLI will be able to perform the PHYSx workload fine for most executions.

As far as the sound card goes, I'm definitely going to prioritize it for last. The ASUS P8P67 boards come with an excellent onboard audio codec. Much better than my old generic Dell onboard audio... My Bose speakers are doing great with this thing.

I'll have the first 560 in mid-May, so I'll be able to run the 560 as the main GPU + 460 for PHYSx

So the 3rd 16x sized slot can run a PHYSx card... what would happen if you attempted to run Tri-SLI on it? Would it even work? I suspect that the P67 limits the ability too much to even justify trying tri-SLI

My vote is also 2x560 SLI + sound card.

There's no games out there that really require a dedicated physX card. You might find Mafia 2 runs more smoothly if you split your SLI set and run physX on one card and do rendering on the other, but otherwise you will fine just running physX on one of the cards in your SLI set on any other hardware-PhysX title.

Honestly buying a physX card is really kinda foolish. If you have an appropriate gpu lying around, it's worth using for the few titles that actually support hardware PhysX, but I wouldn't buy one for it. It's just not used nearly enough to be worth the cost (+ power + heat). Batman AA, Mafia 2, Metro (a little) and a handful of more obscure titles is about the only time physX runs on the gpu.

A sound card is mandatory to me. I have decent speakers and headphones so I can totally hear the diff between onboard and my x-fi. HUGELY, actually.

My vote is for 2 GTX 560's SLI (No Dedicated PHYSX card) + Sound Card. I would look at the ASUS Xonar lineup for the soundcard. They are usually cheaper than Creative.

Thanks for the comments, brettjv & TheSchlaf! It looks like GTX 560 SLI + Sound Card is gonna be the winner. Another thought I had was the low number of games that use physX... why so low? Is it hard to produce games w/ physX?

Will we see more physX enabled games in the future?

Yes, I am very happy with my ASUS 460 and my ASUS p67 motherboard. How are the mid-line Xonar's? I'm by no means an audiophile, but since my original question referred to "Gameplay" as in overall gameplay, then I guess my Audio experience should proportionally match my Graphical experience!

Y'all are awesome, thanks for the advice!
