Thread Starter
I'm going to be moving to Houghton, MI (way up in the upper peninsula of MI, near wisconsin) and i was gonna get charters 12mb dl 1mb upload service

is that good enough for online gaming and FPS'S etc? ofc id prob use close chicago servers and stuff for better latency.

That speed should work for gaming and video watching. But if your ping times are bad then you will suffer, but normally cable is pretty good about having good ping times.

well in all games i know (fps games/mmos) they have servers in chicago, and chicago is literally 400miles away if you go straight down so ping times should b okay right? im asking some1 ik that lives there to see what his ping is, it's the same internet the university uses i think

imo right now i use comcast 3mb down and 768kb up and i get 40-70ms ping on the NY WoW SERVERS which is good

and like 30-50ms in BFBC2/Crysis2

if it is the internet the university uses then it should be pretty decent, i wouldn't be too worried about it.

im gonna ask someone there to run a pingtest, what's a good ping for fps's like bfbc2 and crysis 2? and for WoW mmos

Like 30-100 for fps games?

and 50-150 for mmo's?

i played w/ crysis 2 and had 31ping and raped, 150ping still raped
bfbc2 well... i usually have 70-100 on bfbc2 i think now but thats me in NY playing on like chicago servers 1000miles away lol.

whats good latency?

Really anything below 100 is going to be fine. the normal ping level at which you start noticing is 100ms, because it is 1/10th of a second, so you actually start noticing the lag.

so if you get anything below 100 then you are just fine. 30ms is roughly the fastest ping you are going to see for servers, unless you are insanely close to the server.

You would be fine gaming on a 768 kbit connection.

General preferred latency for FPS is 1-70ms. A bit higher and it will be noticeable.
MMOs are still playable even in the 150-200ms range. Your spells will be a bit laggy but you can still perform.

ping time and internet speed have nothing to do with each other. You can have 256kbps internet and get 10ms, and you could have 20mbps internet and get 50ms to the same server. they don't correlate to each other.
