What version of GTA4 to buy for mods?

Thread Starter
Some mods have problems with the steam version I've heard... is the direct 2 drive version okay? Or should I just wait until I can get to a store to buy a physical copy?

My mate has GTA4 on STEAM and he has no problem running mods. I have a retail copy of EFLC and no problem running mods either. EFLC is cheaper too

To be safe i would pick it up retail, some do have problems. You get a poster that way too don't forget

Sometime there are problems with the steam version but not too often, content modding like cars should work but trainers and IV:MP may not work.

I would buy retail physical copy.

I run car mods, simple trainer, and some scripts on GTA IV and EFLC. Both I bought on steam the only difference is the install folder other than having to figure that out everything works fine. The game was on sale on steam last week.

People report that Steam will check for modified files and redownload them automatically, but I think you can disable that. Probably.

Just put dsound.dll and trainer.asi in the root of the GTA 4 directory.. meaning the game directory in steam/steamapps for you.

I have the steam version and wasnt aware there were differences, i modded it SO heavily including all the trainers, snow mods, graphics overhaul, every car in the game was replaced with my custom car pack. Pick up steam unless you want that nifty poster thing.

That's only when you tell steam to "Verify Integrity of game cache" and that only affects car mods.
