Pretty straight up that your system is more than capable. Any serious bottleneck a SINGLE GTX 580 would be facing would probably only be with a slow core2duo. If you're talking SLi, tri sli or quad, only then would a real cpu bottleneck come up.

Your PSU is enough for a 580 SLi setup.

Your ram is great.
Your cooling should be good.
MB and CPU are good. Quad core with HT oc-ed to 3.6 no probs.

Your system looks good. It should handle a GTX 580 with no issue. Just make sure when you switch drivers, you run driversweeper to completely remove the old ATI drivers.
no problem, you have a good quad core, it will be fine for a while to come, nice case, i might get one myself in a few years, just to ask: why did you go 5870 in the first place? did you get it when it came out?

Thanks alot for the response guys, much appreciated!

@phantasmor Yeah the case is great, loads of room, good airflow...just all round good. I got a 5870 when it first appeared, it is a good card and does me well however this gtx 580 looks like a beast. I would go 590 but looks a little too expensive.

@TheSchlaf Thanks for the advice. I'll use driversweeper

@ZealotKi11er What card would you recommend bearing in mind what i said about the 590 above. I may go sli in the future with the 580 anyway.

Im preparing the rig so i can play Battlefield 3 when it comes out at max or as close to max settings.

I wasnt sure whether my cooling was sufficient enough for the card, i assumed it was anyway .

You guys think im making the right choice for upgrade? Any other suggestions are welcome.

You're all set brother. 580 is a great card. I mean, bang for buck you'd be better off getting another 5870 ... that'd be faster and in the end probably cost less, but if you're not into crossfire for some reason, or feel like you want the extra vram for futureproofing ... can't go wrong with the 580. They are expensive though ...
