Just posting to back this up. Way too often I get people telling me I can't see over 60fps in games or that the human eye has an fps limit.. both false. There's a major difference between 125 and 250 on CoD4, and anyone who has played competitively or on jump maps can back my claim up.

I'm going to back this up as well. You really have to see it to understand the difference. If all you've ever known is LCDs (even 120Hz ones) then yes you're going to think it's smooth. But once you've tried a CRT at 120Hz, or even 160Hz, then you'll see what you've been missing. No LCD display really smooth motion.

It's the same as with cars for example. If all you've ever driven are Civics and Altimas, then sure they'll seem just fine. But once you get behind the wheel of an M5 you'll realize just how bad their performance really is. (Of course, what you end up buying is still influenced by more practical matters, such as price and gas mileage, but that's a different story.)

Maybe I'll just wait until I can afford a Dell U2711 next Christmas... What you guys think? Should I pull the trigger on the U2311H or wait?
Check xbit labs for monitor reviews. They don't have this monitor over there (I think), but you can see comparisons of TN and IPS monitors. The reviews are very technical, and they have things like images of backlight uniformity, etc. You might not be able to see what it really looks like, but seeing the difference of things like brightness uniformity should help you realize how inferior TN panels are and how much better it could be

The selection of games you play has a huge impact on the importance of 120hz for people. Anyone who only plays bad company 2 and racing games and MMORPGs has 0 use for 120hz displays.

But if you play unreal, quake, TF2, COD, or any other twitchy shooter, a 120hz (or higher) display will be a life changer. And in this case, I would not recommend 120hz LCD displays. Why? Because IMO, they are too expensive for what they are. They are pretty much overshadowed by CRT monitors, but they still cost bazillions. They are also a poorer investement in my opinion in the modern era than an IPS panel. 120hz LCDs are TN, and the benefits of IPS are higher than 120hz LCD IMO. These days there is no huge benefit from 120hz. That money would be better spent on making your games look better with IPS.

But I still play loads of older fast paced games, so this CRT is nice for that.

Agreed. BUT the difference would still be visible.

Yep. If 120Hz LCDs had CRT-like performance it would be a different story - they might be worth giving up IPS image quality for the higher framerates and butter-smooth motion. But they don't, they're just glorified sucky TN panels, with a glorified sucky LED backlight (I've never seen a CCFL model).

That's why I only ever recommend two types of monitors: IPS LCDs (normally Dell because of their value, but also HP/NEC/Eizo/Lacie depending on what's best), and Diamondtron/Trinitron CRTs. Even if you can't afford or don't want to spend money on an IPS panel, there's no WAY you can't afford a CRT, and they're better in every way than IPS except gamut (and that only matters for photographers and designers anyway). TN panels just aren't worth spending the money on.

Well, there IS one place for TN panels, which is as cheap-o monitors for offices. But that's it.

Well not exactly. Not everyone lives in teh americas where there are enough people for SOMEONE to be very interested in your CRT. Here in finland nobody would ever sell anything as such for such a high price, since nobody would buy it. So plenty of good trinitrons are being sold at online auctions for 15€, 5€ and 0.5€. Yet nobody ever buys them...

I mean, I got this thing for 35€. With a little tweaking, it looks a lot better than my TN panels already. Now if only I had that cable that I need for windas...

I meant it the other way around - if you want to buy a monitor, then you can always buy a CRT even if you don't have enough money for a good IPS panel. There's no excuse to buy TN. So you're actually better off than the US is!

And did you find the file with the circuit diagram for the windas cable?

Well the trinitrons being sold here for that price are pretty much all 19", and 1920x1440 @ 75hz

EDIT: I found the file for the circuit. I'm probably gonna try doing it when I got the time. We'll see when that is.

Ah then yeah that's the same as here. Here it's only the high end ones (FW900, F520, C520K, etc) that cost a lot.

Here they don't cost a lot. They just aren't for sale. Not to be found anywhere.

I was lucky to catch this one.
