First WC, i7 920 2.66@4.0HT Help please :)

Thread Starter
This is my first WC, and I wonder about the first results I have got

Vcore 1.3185v
Qpi/Uncore 1.35v
Cpu PLL 1.88v

Not sure how this should be presented, I followed this guide

Prime95 16 hours Torture Test passed.
Mem on 1527 Mhz, I haven't started with the memory yet.

Cpu idle : 37c water 31c
Cpu load : About 80c I think it was on the highest, sometimes a core could get 86c, but the others where like 82c? (I didn't take much notes, just started xD) Water ~38c Ambient ~25c

I have just started doing this, and I'm planning to get a NB/SB water block, not those large ones that cost a arm and a leg
post #2 of 55
Try lowering that Cpu Pll,should be able to lower it.

IMO temps do seem high, last week i had highest ambients(26oC)in 6 months and max i hit in IBT was 81 degrees with 1.375vcore.

What block you using?

Copy/paste :
The order is Res-> Pump-> Rad-> Cpu-> Gpu --> Res

-Alphacool Cape Bullseye
-Koolance PMP-450 with Alphacool HF D5 TOP
-EK CoolStream RAD XTC (420)
-Swiftech Apooge GT
-Koolance Vid-AR587

- 1/2" Tubing

Oh, and perhaps a bit poor lap job of the cpu block?
Have your tried re-mounting cpu block?

Also im not quite sure, but seem to remember something about an option to bow the blocks base with an optional larger "O"ring.

Just wondering if somethings not right with the way you have block installed as i say,i get a max of 81oC in IBT and thats with my CPU@4300Mhz HT on 1.375Vcore and im using a reall crappy OCZ cheapo £20 block until i get another through the post on tuesday.

Dont get me wrong,i dont think your in danger but i reckon you could be limiting yourself here in what your cpu could acheive,if you can get lower temps then you can go further with your overclock if you wanted.

Also what ram exactly are you running?

I have started a new test, with cpu pll 1.8v

I have Corsair XMS3 1600 MHz 9-9-9-24
I run my cpu pll at 1.8,usually have my cpu @ 4400Mhz with HT on and still only use 1.8,theres people on here that i have seen run cpu pll way low and still acheive deccent overclock.

Im thinking that if you could get that qpi/vtt down a few notches and still maintain stability then it should help towards lower cpu temps.
More than anything though i would be looking into the setup of your blocks base and if its correctly mounted.

Good look and hopefully you can get some lower temps

EDIT: just seen the ram you say you have, with those timings not being too tight i think its safe to say you should be able to acomplish a lower qpi/vtt setting.

Oh, the fans and pump are not on full btw.

Going out into the sun for a bit. Prime95 is running

Yeah, as Superj1977 said you might want to try re-mounting the block. I've got pretty much an identical system and I'm getting 10-15C cooler at the same clock/voltage (1.296v for 4.0GHz) in IBT than you are in prime. Also I don't think a chipset block is really worth it, I have a sensor on the heatsink and its never above 48C.

Awesome sauce, keep trying for lower on the qpi/vttl until you get BSOD 0x124 then bring it back a notch.
