Crossfiring, mind helping me get prepared? PCI-e question

Hello OCN! I'm turning 18 on May 7th. Screw clothes, I want to crossfire 5850s ! I'm going to be purchasing the second 5850 in less than a week, just waiting for the check to deposit. I know there's some setup to it, so I wondered if you guys could get me all ready for when it gets here so I'm good to go.

I've already disabled ULPS via the registry. My question is, how would I go by seating my two cards?

Here's a picture of my motherboard:

Currently I have my single 5850 in the top Dark Blue PCI-e slot. Where would I put the second one for best performance? I know there's like 18x and then 8x and then 4x, but I've never actually dealt with crossfire so I'm unaware.

Thanks!

Not being an Intel guy I had to do a little checking but you'll want to use the top 2 PCI-e x16 slots (dark blue/white). That bottom black one only runs up to x4. Then just connect the bridge and enjoy

Thank you for the fast reply man, very appreciated!

You want to disable ulps when you actually have two cards in there, and only if you use afterburner.

Yes, I know. But it won't hurt my single 5850 to be running at 3D clocks idle, rather than 2D for just a few days.

Quick question, I disabled it because I heard there's also performance issues as well as crashes caused by ULPS if not disabled, even without MSI AB being used.

I'm still going to end up using MSI AB for overclocking, probably.

You'll also want to make sure you enable it in Catalyst Control Center. You probably want to download something like MSI Afterburner as was referenced above to check your GPU usage to confirm it works.

Keep in mind crossfire is only enabled in full-screen mode, so you'll have to jump into a full-screen game, run for a bit, then alt-tab out and check your usage graph in afterburner. Alternatively, if you have dual monitors, you can just position the graph on the second monitor.

Good luck.

Right! That was my plan. Use CCC to enable crossfire and then use MSI AB for a reference and for overclocking those two cards.

Also, couldn't I just enable MSI AB's on-screen-display to check the usage of both GPUs?

Quick question: You said crossfire only works in full screen. I run WoW in Windows Mode just because it's easier to tab out and stuff easier. Would crossfire not work since it'll be running in Windows Mode?

FYI CCC will auto detect and pull up a screen after you have installed the 2nd GPU.

The white one is where you wanna stick the new GPU.

crossfire does not work with windowed mode.

You only need to disable ulps, not because ulps is bad, but because Afterburner is incompatible with ulps, and for that matter powerplay. AB + ulps = hard lock.

You are born on the 7th, I'm on the 8th, we should get together and get drunk . I am a long time CFX user and I"ve had my share of issues with drivers, stuttering and yoyo performance. I hope you don't experience them.
