The performance isn't the same. You can believe it is, but until you upgrade you will never know.

I don't have multiple monitors or super high res, but I know that once you start cranking max settings in games, there's no way older series cards can play as smooth.

i didnt see a point when i had SLi'd GTX275s just back in february.
but when my HD4890 RMA came in i RMA'd it back (they sent me a bad batch XFX 4890) and they gave me a HD5830.
so i strives for 2 5830s and look at me now! CF'd 5830s ftw.

my 5830s get the job done, so im happy. i may be a gen behind but who cares?
the newer stuff is mainly for the ppl that are waaaay behind or have crappy cards, or for ppl with money.
or just for epeen.

ppl should just CF/SLi their cards if they want more performance. its always cheaper!

The new cards are better than the old one's and not just because of dx11 where have you been?Given a choice between a 285 and a 560 only a complete fool would choose the 285.

I don't buy high-end, so I like to sell off my old card while it's worth money, and get something new. Is that ok with you?

I am not going to upgrade my GPU's until I start to see some games come out that will challenge them. I dont think it will be worth it to upgrade until a new counsel comes out. We all saw crysis 2. It was a counsel port, we all know that most games depend on counsel's. So why waist that money?

I hope you know NVIDIA AND ATI ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS!!! They are in the money making business and would like to keep it that way. Our graphics cards and games could be better then they are, we have the technology. But its about money and slowly upgrading you so the co. can make the most money. Dont fall for that trick.

So would some one please explain to me why you bought that new 400 or 500 card? Did you want to be trendy? Or just like being able to say my gpu is bigger then yours.
Maybe the money that goes towards the top cards is what pushes the industry forward? Maybe they use the money on those overpriced GPUs to pay the R&D teams? We buy them because we have the money and want to have the best performing cards money can buy.

So why not to upgrade?

Of course if you are fine with what you have, there is no reason to upgrade.
But not everyone are 100% happy with what they have. And just want the extra kick.
That sentiment lost a little bit of weight after reading you have a 980x and quad sli 580... but still a good point

If you can afford the upgrade and want the upgrade, get the upgrade.

This. In my experience, my PC parts have always depreciated by just about 50% through their lifetime. I've typically tried to sell my GPUs and CPUs for at least 50% of what I paid for them and have succeeded. So, a PC I bought for $1,000 could sell for around $400-$500 (I may keep the hard drives or some other parts) in 2-3 years, covering half the cost of my next build. With the used parts market at my disposal, it is VERY reasonable to me to get high end parts. Higher end cards depreciate less anyways.

It's only a matter of time until the OP comes back an try to convince us to switch to consoles!!!

Anyway, it's ok to be a few gens behind. No shame...but a topic like the OP started is one of frustration...he's probably eyeballing some nice new cards and is craving an upgrade...
