Komputerbay ram? - Page 2

We purchased RAM from KomputerBay a few months ago for Dell Optiplex 990's. We have had nothing but trouble with the RAM. The chips are labeled as 4GB DDR-III 1333MHz, A10772C 021100. The description was 16GB(4x4GB...10666(8-8-8-24) 16 GB Kit.
The chips seemed to work OK for a few weeks, but then we started having problems with blue-screens, rebooting, and frequent program lock-ups. When replaced with 1GB chips as originally received from Dell, the computers performed without issues and performed faster.
I would strongly recommend NOT using RAM purchased from KomputerBay. We tried to get a response from them about the problem with the chips, and never received a reply from them. We purchased 5 sets of these 16 GB kits, so we are out a lot of money.

I recently purchased some Komputerbay SODIMMs, and am now trying to get my money back out of them.


A few quick observations.

1. It seems that Komputerbay does NOT manufacture their own product. it is knockoff crap... [or perhaps it IS their product and IS just knockoff crap??] either way from what I've seen, Komputerbay is total junk.

2. it is not as advertised.. photos show Komputerbay branded RAM on Samsung or Hynix chipsets.. guess what.. it's NOT! I bought 2 - 2x4gb Komputerbay SODIMM sets.. what was marketed in Komputerbay's own marketing photos was Samsung PC8500 SOIC or TSOPs.... What I received as generic 256x8 BGA chips (16 per board).

3. the Komputerbay build quality is polished crap. It should be obvious to anyone that you would want to build using matching chips on your PCBs, to get consistent performance.. Not so with these guys. Note that each SODIMM has 16 256mb chips on it.. Of my 4 cards, NONE were matching.. One card had 7 DIFFERENT mismatched chips. Another had 6, another 5... I gave up at that point....

Oh yeah - - I forgot to mention that they locked up my MacBook Pro. repeatedly. after 20 minutes, two cards went down.. a third was DOA. I didn't bother with the fourth - - I don't run non-matching RAM, as I expect to use my Mac long and hard every day, and don't need it crashing.

4. Customer service is...........well it isn't. No listed phone # for customer service.. Their receipt points you to their website, with no follow up options other than an email. Emails get responded to within a few days. in broken Engrish... mad.gif

My only consolation - - AMEX is going to bat for me....


Let me recommend you learn the lessons I took from this:
buying cheap isn't always the best method.
You get what you pay for.
Look for a company who actually has REAL Americans who can answer the phone or at least answer email..

I would bet my whole computer that it is all binned crap. In other words, it is probably stuff that didn't pass samsung testing.

I have bought 200-pin sodimm 4gb laptop memory from komputerbay and I can't find anything bad? They are cheap and the ram works as advertised. I hope it stay this.

I bought 4x8GB DDR3 1333Mhz sticks about a year ago and they're still running great. I use them for gaming and I run a virtual environment on my computer. I was google-ing the overclockability of these sticks and found this thread. I saw all the hate for them and decided to make an account just to tell you guys that in my experience they're not bad... My Dad's PC that I built has 16GB of the stuff in it and he's had no issued either. It sounds like some dudes got some bad batches or maybe I just got lucky. Who knows.. Does anyone know about the overclockability of the stuff though? They don't have any heat syncs to speak of. hahah
