About to take the dive and upgrade to a HD6950... Famous last words!?!

Hey everybody!

Been stuck in the 4XXX series for the last 2 years so I thought it was about time I upped to the 6XXX series. But just wanted to know a few things. And yes I've googled them but the answers weren't clear! Didn't want to spend so much money without being 100% clear.

Looking to get this bad boy

I'm looking to use 3 monitors... They're all DVI... So I'd have to plug a third into that display port... Does it come with the adapter? If not how much would one of these bad boys cost me?

In terms of installing the card would I just have to driver sweep my current and then install the new one? Or is there something else?

And finally are the models above known to be difficult to unlock? I've looked around but different places say different things...

Thanks guys

1. No, it doesn't come with an adapter. You need to get an active (not passive) adapter. They can run about $30-$40 for a cheap one.

2. For drivers, as long as your current drivers support the 6950, then they will work, but you might want to install the latest just to be sure.

3. For unlocking, as long as it's a referenced, 2gb 6950, you will be able to unlock it. All you need to do is flash the bios to a 6970. I have heard people say that sometimes they won't unlock, but very rarely.

Cheers.

Would this adapter do the job then? not mini! I'll keep looking!

And the actual item description says unlockable to 6970 so it should be fine

I was running like 10.5 or something on my 4870, they worked for the 6950 in 2D just fine. It doesn't really matter if you change the hardware or drivers first.

It's a reference 6950 (pictured, at least). As long as they send you what's in the picture, everything is hunky dory.

Enjoy it man thumb.gif

Could anybody post a link to a decently priced UK site selling these?? Getting a bit confused between what's actually "active" and which ones are mini...

Thanks

Also I've seen a bunch of these apple adapters around... would they work effectively or cause problems?

Do not do this, it is known that the memory timings/voltage that the 6970 bios uses can cause damage to the 6950. There are special bioses floating around that only unlock the shaders on the 6950 while maintaining the same clocks/voltages that are safe.

That Asus card should unlock without any issue, but I've heard reports that AMD has changed the reference design and some of the new cards aren't unlocking like they used to.

Saved my ass there! Any idea where I can pick up the right BIOS??

Yup, those will work fine. I have the official Apple ones from my MacBook and they're exactly the same. Although be warned about some of them that are under $15 as they're very cheaply made and can sometimes not work properly.
