Yeah... that's really mature...

I would be all for these hacktavists creating programs to bypass the Sony software and whatever, but when they ruin the ability to play of those folks who paid decent money for the console and games, that is where they look stupid.

Whoever is responsible for the downtime is just as immature as Sony going after those people running custom software.

This downtime isn't due to a DDOS. This article doesn't make any real sense. Sony would just ban the individual console. Just like how Microsoft doesn't bring down Xbox Live when they find someone with a hacker Xbox.

Sony brought it down, because somebody broke into their fridge, and was eating their foods.

He also said the company has not yet determined if the personal information or credit card numbers of users have been compromised, but that Sony would promptly inform users if it found that was the case.
This isn't because of piracy.

Sometimes you have to break a few eggs in order to break a lot more of the corporate oligarchy's eggs.

Now for anyone who's head isn't stuck in their ass..rebug essentially turns your PS3 into a dev console. With the use of a modified proxy, you could connect your "rebug PS3" to the official PSN and access dev features that Sony offers.

One of these features that was discovered was the credit card payment had no authentication allowed devs to download anything for free! Of course this was abused like hell with "rebug PS3" and led to Sony shutting down PSN.

I'm assuming Sony had no way to distinguish "rebug PS3" and real dev consoles which is why PSN had to be completely shut down. They'll be releasing PSN2 now which they've said will be more security features and what not. Ultimately they're just figured out how to determine or block "rebug PS3" from the PSN again.

Maybe for PSN+ subscribers, but they don't really owe anything to the free PSN people.

Thank you for pointing out my writing disability.

I hope you realise that I wasn't talking about how it was written, I was talking about the logic of the article.

Sony has, and will continue banning PS3 consoles from PSN. Occasionally the hackers will find a way to get these consoles back on PSN. They don't pull PSN every time a new FW that can get these consoles back on PSN is released.

I'll quote the article:

Quote:
  • Rebug was released on 3/31/11.
  • First guides of how to use the dev network to get back on COD games on 4/3/11.
  • Word of NGU users finding a way to pirate PSN content via the dev networks on 4/7/11 (basing this on posts I had to delete on the website. Update: Users have pointed out to me that these posts existed on NGU as of 4/2/11).
  • PSN goes down on 4/20/11
So it took Sony a week to decide to pull the plug on the entire PSN. You can already get most of the games / items from PSN from the internet for free. These people are running a hacked firmware after all it's not like they need to get it through PSN. The actual percentage of PS3's running rebug is incredibly tinny, which makes Sony pulling all of PSN down due to rebug improbable.

Quote:
Edit #3: Ok, it looks like some various news sites have picked up this story and taken it out of context. Once again, this is all speculation and information gathered from various devs in the PS3 scene. It might very well not be the real reason PSN is down, but as the timeline fits, it's a reasonable explanation. Now, as to Rebug directly allowing this to happen, that's not the case at all. Different CFW's have had access to the dev network the whole time. This is not new news for people in the PS3 scene. It's what people have figured out what to do with the said network that has caused all the recent issues. Saying that Rebug is what did this is like saying a gun manufacturer is responsible for every death that happens with a gun.
I guess the question is why would Sony pull the entire PSN over this credit card authorization issue? At most it would take them a day to shutdown the PSN dev store. In the past Sony has taken just the PSN store down for maintenance, and left most of the other PSN services running. Why would now be any different?

Did rebug have something to do with PSN being brought down? Maybe. At this point only the people working at Sony know the real reason. Hopefully in the future the truth will come out. However, I highly doubt the public will get the full story of what transpired here.

EDIT: Looks like I was right. It wasn't rebug . . . Now I wish it was!
