560 1GHZ or 6950 Unlock CERTAIN GAMES? - Page 4

I think A really big difference will be seen in games like BF3 and RAGE when they come out due to the more vRAM on the 6950 and unlocking the ref versions to a 6970 is one of the easiest things I have ever done when it comes to computers. I downloaded 2 files and pressed a button.

Not rocket science.

As other have said, ATI drivers have come a long way in terms of game performance since a lot of reviews have been posted (link). I saw about 5fps more in 2033 (the only game I've measured).

I suppose I'd say go for the 6950, since mine has been able to perform well above a stock 6970, but the 560 cards are a lot better if you want to fold

How much longer do you think the reference designs will be around (6950)? Also, any price drops or deals you think will happen within the next 3 months?

Reference design isn't going anywhere more than likely, though they have made a revision to the reference card that prevents unlocking. Your best bet would be either buy used, or buy new ASAP.

The original reference is actually the revised card. AMD only changed the "ref" design because TI, as in Texas Instruments had a fatal shortage of DrMOS parts. The Volterra parts are much more expensive so don't expect them to keep shipping expensive cards that are actually NOT AS GOOD as the real reference design. It'll take time, but I'd expect the Volterra cards to dry up.
