Just to point something out to everybody who is suggesting minor sabotage: the OP's roommate knows where he sleeps at night.

This is the only way to effectively do it.

Go to his computer->connection cable->rip it out.

Open a web browser and navigate to 192.168.0.1.
2. Select Advanced Setup.
3. Select a Device from the drop down list or enter the IP Address of the device you want to block a
service to.
4. Select the service/services that you want to block. (Web, FTP, Newsgroups, E-mail, IM)
5. Click Apply to save your changes.

You will need to be sure he has a static IP for your local network and only the IPs for the computers that are being used are allowed traffic. You can probably do it using MAC addresses as well.
Okay, I saw this setting but it wont block torrents I think, as they usually run on some random ass port like 50259 or something?

or am I wrong?

Need a router with a nice QOS, then you could just limit upload.

Does it support a custom firmware? if the default firmware doesn't have a option? I would check into that. or buy a cheap asus router rt-nt12.
No QoS, no custom firmware. Its an Actiontec Q1000

Yes, actually, majority of the market is on 182.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1... how bout you save your sarcasm and let people help.

Also, the point was interfering with torrents, not his web browsing experience. He does homework at home too, I don't want to mess with that! That's not right...

If you read my first post, I plan on talking with him about it, but I'm looking for backup incase results are not good.

Q1000 doesn't seem to support any kind of QoS. I don't want to throttle all of his internet, just non-port 80 traffic really

Well, its not the bandwidth that worries me, there's tons of that. I"m concerned about getting a takedown notice from my ISP LOL

Bandwidth isn't exactly a problem.. I have 40mbps download lol, its content related

Who's paying for it? If he is paying for the net he has every right to torrent.

Sit him down and tell him about upload/download stuff, and limiting it. eg make downloads 500kb a sec so you can still youtube/game, etc.

Also find out about how much he can upload until it saturates alot of the TCP traffic.

Also, about the legal notice thing, if he downloads stuff and gets notices, it's not your problem. It's his.
All bills are in my name. He does limit it, i'm concerned about content. not bandwidth.

Talk to him about getting a seedbox or a private tracker. Tell him to fork out like 10 dollars a month for a seedbox, then FTP all the crap he wants to his PC. FTP runs through port 80 and stuff, and it's the same as bringing down a download from rapidshare or the like.

Private trackers same thing except free.

Moderators, i am not talking about piracy, there are plenty of legal stuff he can get.
Well you can punch me but it won't solve your problem this is why

Firewall or filtering -> Encryption all bets are off

Mac filtering ->change his mac or just use a virtual machine

block his ip -> just get a new ip and then there's services like YF to bypass it aswell

Port filtering ->have you ever use a torrent application? Good luck in blocking sixty-five thousand five-hundred and thirty-five ports
post #28 of 39
The best way to fix this is to go into the software he uses, IE AZUREZ and limit upload max to like 20kb/s also limit download max. Also limit Max connections to like 40.

ALL these settings are generally located in options inside of various torrent software.
