[Consumerist] Toshiba Won't Repair Faulty Hard Drive Because You Sharpied "Faulty" On

Chris was fixing his neighbor's Toshiba laptop when he discovered that the hard drive was defective. Just like how he does at his job where he is a professional computer technician, he wrote "FAULTY X" on it to indicate it shouldn't be used again. When he sent the computer, which was still under its 1-year warranty period, in to Toshiba, he was dismayed by the reply he got back. They refused to replace the hard drive because "the label was written/torn" and "Toshiba does not cover the cost for this type of damage." Now they $417.58 for the repair.

If you wanted them to warranty it in the first place why have anyone tear into it ? I am sorry but I side with the company on this one. From their standpoint, who is to say it wasnt damaged by the person opening up the machine ?

I sharpied "fix me plz" on my 360 when it RRODed, I think it was the 6th one that I eventually sold on ebay lol. Anyway MS didn't care so neither should toshiba.

If he was "fixing" his neighbors laptop, he should have just purchased a new HDD and had it up and going in no time; rather than waiting for toshiba to replace it and send it back out.

I can see why you would want to have it repaired since it's under warranty... The guy could have sent it in himself rather than going through someone else.

Not that I agree with them for their insane repair pricing, but still...

I would never write/mark/touch/tear the original factory label on all my stuffs.

Edited: Btw, it says Momentus on the label. Isn't that one of Seagate drive? I've never used Seagate tho.

Oh bull. What if he was opening up the case himself to replace the hard drive or RAM? Is he "unauthorized" to upgrade the RAM himself? What a joke.

Anyways, a new 1tb laptop drive is $80 not $420.
