Not sure about Toshiba, but the Samsung, Dell and Compaq laptops I've been dealing with recently haven't got any sticker of that sort. At all.

Assuming they run their RMA service like most companies these days, the hard drive would be sent back an immediate replacement would be returned. This would be an RMA someone else had sent in beforehand. The faulty original drive would then go through testing and be sent out a while later to another RMA customer. Rarely these days do you get back the same drive/card/device you sent in. So by writing FAULTY on the drive, Toshiba would have to resticker the thing (which sucks, btw, try removing your entire hard drive sticker) and send it back. If they were repairing your drive and then returning it, I doubt they would have cared.

Probably wouldn't have been any issue if the drive was RMAed to it's maker, instead of trying to get warranty service on the entire system.

I have to side with the company on this one. It basically is a huge sign saying I tore into my equipment. Now you have to wonder well did the consumer mess it up or not. Thats why those little void if removed stickers are everywhere. If its under warranty leave it alone. Lesson learned.

The repair cost a little steep though for a hdd swap.

Right, because a tech who may have more than one faulty laptop/desktop floating around his work area would never have markings to differentiate his spare hard drives and the like from the broken ones.

I cant stand Toshiba. I had a laptop for two months and the Hard Drive died twice. Then they charge you 25 dollars to ship it in for repairs. Another 20 bucks and I could of just bought a new hard drive. I understand shipping is expensive, but if the productive is in warranty they should be responsible for shipping.

I'm a tech. I would NEVER write on equipment that is still under warranty, and I have never heard of anyone who does.
