Look, if anyone says this is stupid, you obviously don't know how warranty's work and I hope to god you don't dig into people's PC's.. The MOMENT you, without an A+ certification, and without a repair certification for the company (Dell, HP, ect) open the case/remove a screw, the warranty is void because you are not authorized to work on it while it is under warranty.

Standard operating procedure. Makes sure people don't break their own **** just to get it replaced..

Well it would have been ok.. If he was certified to work on Toshiba systems, and did it professionally.. But I take it he is not certified; nor did he do it professionally..

The importance is to provide an excuse to deny a reasonable claim and not only save the company money, but to charge exorbitant fees on repairs, thus turning a loss into a gain.

IF there was damage that could have possibly been done by the tech then sure, deny the claim, but denying it based on the label being written on makes it obvious what they're trying to do.

If he wanted to label a hard drive that isnt working, he could have used some other sticker label, hell, even post-it and wrote in it. If hes a professional technician, he should know not to write directly on the hardware which actually has information such as serial number on it. Especially he if he plans on sending for RMA.
