Default Ultra-120 Lapped

http://www.tankguys.biz/product_info...oducts_id=1743

I know many of these Thermalright coolers come very concave (the two I've played with so far have been for sure). I'm toying with the idea of doing some basic lapped coolers for purchase, to help alleviate this issue, for people who don't want to spend the time/effort to do it themselves.

I am not shooting for a mirror finish on these at all, just making sure they are flat. That's really more important anyway - users can shine them up if they so choose. If this proves popular at all, I'll offer something similar with the U-120 extremes as well, and possibly other coolers. It's a very time consuming and boring process though, so we'll see

I doubt that, I think it voids the warranty.

Its a very good idea but most people dont even understand what lapping is and if its not shiny then there like oh my god thats not good. It would be nice to be able to order one allready done though, lapping those things is a PITA I would rather spend my time doing the cpu (there easy)

Why not add 'lapped' as an option in the order form (for an extra charge, obviously)? That's probably the best option.

I know that when I build my next computer, it will be liquid cooled, and a lapped water block would be awesome. But, I hate lapping myself. So time-consuming and dull...

Something for you to think about Tankguys...

My mate sold his lapped AC64 Non-Pro on eBay - they retail for £10 max shipped ($20) and he sold it for £27 + shipping! ($54).

Takes time but could be a great money maker, and $15 extra is not bad at all - some temperature results before and after would help too

I like it.. but, would it have any effect on the warranty ( not that that would stop me from lapping it)?

Oh , and one more thing. Is that thing compatible with socket 939?

Yes, it'll void the warranty. Not sure if Tankguys will offer their own or what but with a heatsink what is there that could be wrong with it which wouldn't be obvious to Tankguys?

Ultimately that's what I'll do - but right now, our website isn't working with IE. If a user uses that to place an order, it doesn't save the option they pick, so it doesn't charge them the right amount, etc. Once I fix that, it'll be nice

I agree - shiny would be nice. But it's not worth it. Even charging $15 for the basic flatness is arguable. It took me quite a long time to lap it even that far, as these coolers tend to be quite concave. Gong for a mirror finish would be nice, but it'd add a good chunk of time to the job. Ultimately, flatness is the most imporant part anyway. In fact, there is some research out there that says mirror finish is actually counter-productive.

Nope - that'd void the warranty. Of course, I realize most of you buy the chip and OC it, voiding the warranty anyway... but people aren't too keen on buying a CPU with no warranty/return policy

And yes, these heatsink warranties are voided - so there's no warranty on them at all. However, as you say, there isn't much that goes wrong with them. If they look good while we're lapping them, they'll be fine. As such, there's no warranty/return policy on them at all... but that's not really a problem.
