Source* Betelgeuse losing mass
* Explosion will create "new sun"
* May be set for 2012 appearance
IT'S the ultimate experience for Star Wars fans - staring forlornly off into the distance as twin suns sink into the horizon.
Yet it's not just a figment of George Lucas's imagination - twin suns are real. And here's the big news - they could be coming to Earth.
Last I looked, Betelguese was too far away to stand out from other stars. So, for x amount of time, we will have... one additional point of light in the sea of stars we already have...Originally Posted by Setzer;12065366
They say that we will for x amount of time, have two suns (in theory), just like Tatooine (from Star Wars)
Really? The second biggest star in the UNIVERSE? I didn't realize that we had charted out the entire universe...Originally Posted by Source
The second biggest star in the universe is losing mass, a typical indication that a gravitation collapse is occurring.
Nope, nothing can surpass the speed of light, it is a universal speed limit. For anything with mass to travel at or beyond the speed of light the mass must be infinite and would require an infinite amount of energy in order to attain such speed, which is impossible of course.Originally Posted by mcgrunt42;12066914
Wouldn't an explosion like this , the neutrons and whatever else it emits travel faster than the speed of light?
Maybe we should be good neighbors and bring it some grub, I think Pluto will do.Originally Posted by Xenthos;12063880
Somehow, I don't feel comfortable, living next to a wannabe black-hole/neutron star.
Simple fact is, they just don't know enough about its mass loss, to make an accurate prediction.Betelgeuse is already old for its size class and is expected to explode relatively soon compared to its age. Solving the riddle of mass-loss will be the key to knowing when a supernova might occur, an event expected anytime in the next million years, with some speculation it could even occur in the next millennium.
Given that light can be in at least 2 states (a wave or a particle and probably both at the same time, lol) then yes... I suppose when it is a particle it must have mass, no?Originally Posted by mcgrunt42;12067950
light has mass?
No, particles that make up light (photons) are massless.Originally Posted by mcgrunt42;12067950
light has mass?
No--why would they?Originally Posted by mcgrunt42;12066914

Maybe.Originally Posted by mcgrunt42;12067950

And here is more AMMO, for you to use.Originally Posted by lordikon;12065443
It's good to hear that the 2012 doomsday idiots have something else to "confirm" their predictions. I swear, if I meet someone in real life who thinks that crap is real, I might just kick them in the throat.
The earth is bound to go kaboom one day even if not from this. We need to get into Star Wars mode and start colonizing space if our species is to survive...Originally Posted by caraboose;12068132
I think its about time to take every single scientist, tell them to work together, and make some crazy space stuff. Why? So when Earth does go kaboom from this (it will eventually) we have methods of escaping... Plus, it'd be interesting to see how long it takes before the scientists go crazy and kill each other.
