It's good to hear that the 2012 doomsday idiots have something else to "confirm" their predictions. I swear, if I meet someone in real life who thinks that crap is real, I might just kick them in the throat.

There is the possability that it will cook us with gamma radiation, but that is unlikly because it emits most of it from its poles, and we are not in the path.

I thought gamma emissions like that happened during formation rather than supernovae.

Last I looked, Betelguese was too far away to stand out from other stars. So, for x amount of time, we will have... one additional point of light in the sea of stars we already have...

"Twin Suns" makes me pine for another "little big adventure"

This line gets to me:

Really? The second biggest star in the UNIVERSE? I didn't realize that we had charted out the entire universe...

Anyhoo, perhaps I don't quite understand how a star going supernova from 1300 light years away can possibly appear as a full sun in our atmosphere, but at best, won't it appear as a slightly brighter star during that time? I could imagine that over the blackness of space, the relative brightness from the star going nova might be significant against the general lack of light when you're not near a neighboring sun--but given the light flux from our sun, which is only like, what, 13 light minutes away, the light density from a star 1300 light years away going nova--after the light disperses so significantly--that it really would be perceptible to us in any extent, even at night, despite the fact that it might be "tens of million times brighter than our sun" is for a brief period of time... But this will look nothing like what appears in Star Wars, as the author likens it to...

Nope, nothing can surpass the speed of light, it is a universal speed limit. For anything with mass to travel at or beyond the speed of light the mass must be infinite and would require an infinite amount of energy in order to attain such speed, which is impossible of course.

Maybe we should be good neighbors and bring it some grub, I think Pluto will do.

There is absolutely no scientific proof that Betelgeuse will explode within the next year.

In fact, most astronomers put the stars demise at anywhere within the next 1000 years, to the next 1,000,000 years.

Betelgeuse is already old for its size class and is expected to explode relatively soon compared to its age. Solving the riddle of mass-loss will be the key to knowing when a supernova might occur, an event expected anytime in the next million years, with some speculation it could even occur in the next millennium.
Simple fact is, they just don't know enough about its mass loss, to make an accurate prediction.

In fact the article linked in the original post actually states this as well... making its own opening statement and title, a little misleading.

Now it is possible, an explosion could occur very soon, likely within our lifetimes, but no one really knows for sure. But astronomers and scientists have known for at least a year now, as they had reported in 2009 that Betelgeuse had rapidly lost over 15% of its mass, compared to measurements taken 15 years prior.

Given that light can be in at least 2 states (a wave or a particle and probably both at the same time, lol) then yes... I suppose when it is a particle it must have mass, no?

No, particles that make up light (photons) are massless.

Edit: Light is interesting in that it is both a wave and a particle at the same time. In that it's made up of particles but travels in a wave which is why we have a spectrum of light.

No--why would they?

And here is more AMMO, for you to use.

Dare them to prove, that any actual predictions for a 2012 doomsday actually exist.

IF, they refer to this Mayan Calendar nonsense; then all you have to do is point out the simple fact that the Mayan Calender does not actually say anything, nothing, what so ever, about a doomsday event.

What it actually predicts.

Is a rebirth! Its a repeat of a very long cycle. Some claim the 2012 predictions on the calendar mean a "reawakening" of the human soul and conscious. In fact it is not even the end of the Mayan Calendar as many believe. There are these bull**** claims that the Calendar just stops, on December 21, 2012. Not true! Considering the Calender makes additional prophecies for another 300 - 1000 years into our future, including the resurrection of some famous Mayan King on his birthday some 300 years from now.

So yea... Doomsday? End of the world?

Bull****!

The Mayans themselves never even said anything about that!

I think its about time to take every single scientist, tell them to work together, and make some crazy space stuff. Why? So when Earth does go kaboom from this (it will eventually) we have methods of escaping... Plus, it'd be interesting to see how long it takes before the scientists go crazy and kill each other.

The earth is bound to go kaboom one day even if not from this. We need to get into Star Wars mode and start colonizing space if our species is to survive...
