[io9]Slim chance that asteroid named after Stargate villain could hit Earth in 2036

Previously, it was only the Russians who were saying that the asteroid Apophis could smash into the Earth in 2036, but now a NASA spokesperson is admitting it's a possibility... albeit a slim one.
Everybody agrees that Apophis will swing by Earth in 2029 â€" coming closer than some of our geosynchronous satellites â€" but the Russian Space Federation believes that it may go through a gravitational "keyhole" that will bring it back around to hit Earth in 2036. (There are already a ton of websites, some of them religious, about the countdown to the 2036 apocalypse â€" just in case 2012 falls through.)
A NASA spokesperson, Donald Yeomans, insists the chances are 1 in 250,000 of Apophis hitting Earth in 2036. Says Yeomans:
The situation is that in 2029, April 13, [Apophis] flies very close to the Earth, within five Earth radii, so that will be quite an event, but we've already ruled out the possibility of it hitting at that time... On the other hand, if it goes through what we call a keyhole during that close Earth approach … then it will indeed be perturbed just right so that it will come back and smack Earth on April 13, 2036.

At some point earth will get hit by an asteroid, so I dont see why governments wouldnt start collaborating on a system to protect the earth.. Except greed.

If it hits.... it would be billions....

Reason why? Government really do have more pressing matters to fix in the next 10-20 years first...

There have been numerous documentary specials on similar things and how the people of Earth would deal with it. The simplest sounds like just smashing something into it so that its trajectory is nudged just enough to miss us.

Speaking of Stargate...I make this plea to people: Please start watching Stargate Universe! It is a great show, but because SyFy is ******ed, they put it on Mondays during regular broadcast station shows so the ratings are down, causing them to think they have to cancel the show. Watch it so ratings pick up and SyFy changes its mind and renews the show! SAVE STARGATE UNIVERSE!!!

...It is a sad day when ancient egyptian mythology being the inspiration for a name is mistaken for a tv show...

It's a sad day when people don't read the article. If you had, you'd see that the asteroid was indeed named for the Stargate character.

Don't mean to go offtopic but...
Universe is dead man. It is unlikely that Universe will get even a movie/miniseries nor a 3rd season.
And..Universe wasn't a stargate show...I wasted my time after that. The show was more flawed than they promised.

NASA initially estimated the energy that Apophis would have released if it struck Earth as the equivalent of 1480 megatons of TNT. A later, more refined NASA estimate was 880 megatons, then revised to 510 megatons.[3] The impacts which created the Barringer Crater or the Tunguska event are estimated to be in the 3â€"10 megaton range[19] The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa was the equivalent of roughly 200 megatons. In comparison, the Chicxulub impact, believed by many to be a significant factor in the extinction of the dinosaurs, has been estimated to have released about as much energy as 100,000,000 megatons.

Seriously? That's tiny. We could stop that in 2036. I mean all you have to do to knock it off course is nudge it a bit.

The show was never flawed... it simply wasn't the exact same thing, and that's what they said would happen. After the characters were developed in the first half of the first season (something that took several seasons for the other shows because of the style of story telling), things became remarkably similar to the franchise as you knew it. You gave up too soon; don't be a fare weather fan!

Yep. Land a probe on it, do a slow, calculated thruster burn to nudge the orbit just enough and no issue. It is only 750ft wide so the crater would be about double the size of the one in Arizona, so about 3-400 miles out would be affected, unless it hit the water, then that would be a bigger issue to deal with.

Ah, about as big as bobby kotick Ego, not bad, but I'm sure if something like this is going to happen, we could dig into a cave, have loads of food and water, and give out passes to people, but really the rich people will pay to get into the cave however when the doors are closing some bunch poorer people will stop the cave from closing and they have to find some sort of way of closing it risking their lives! WOW this is an amazing film idea!

I think I will call it 2036!

You guys are ******ed.. 2012 is a sham, never gonna happen. Whatever happened to the "end of the world" predictions we had years ago after generation and generation? ADMIT IT it's not gonna be over. We'll still be here. As for the asteroid i'm glad its in 2036 cuz i'll be ughhh 47 yrs old but.. i honestly think by that time we will have better technology even weapons to stop asteroids from hurling into earth via space.

2012.. well.. i still think we'll get a wake up visitor call from Aliens greeting us how to use better technology like repeating history what they did years ago, i have theories.
