An experience that goes well beyond the game itself.

Pros: Brilliant narration, great script and a different kind of experience.

Cons: If at first it seems nearly endless, you eventually get to understand how it works.

Let me start by saying that it's hard to review this game. Not because it isn't good, but because describing it in detail gives away some of the fun. So let's keep it short and succinct: did you love Portal and Portal 2 ? You'll love this too. This has the short length of the original Portal, combined with the narrative depth of the second game. And all in all it makes a compelling case for a sequel. What really got me to download the demo and then buy the game (actually the demo didn't really convince me, I was already convinced before) ? The videos on the Steam store page. The first one is more of an introduction of the general game mechanics / story, but what really stands out are the...

Metro 2033 review

Posted

Pros: Great atmosphere, great graphics

Cons: Demanding engine in DX11 (but that is to be expected), character animation could be better

Metro 2033 is, simply put, one of the underrated gems of 2010. I bought it and played it late that year and have to say I keep fond memories of playing it. So much so that I have Metro: Last Light on my Steam wishlist ever since it appeared there. Having said that, I didn't have an easy relationship with the game at first. The game didn't perform that well on my newly acquired GTX 460 1GB, and I soon found out that my Core 2 Duo E8400 was the culprit. But all things have a good reason, and Metro 2033 was the reason I upgraded to a Q9550. Even at stock, the Q9550 let the GPU perform as it should and I could finally play the game on High settings. And what a game. Sure, it's not easy to...

Q.U.B.E. review

Posted

Pros: Intuitive to get started, well calculated difficulty progression, great puzzles.

Cons: For the price ? It could have a story and the graphics could be more elaborate, but this is just nitpicking

Q.U.B.E. (Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion) is a great puzzle / action game from indie developer Toxic Games. For those who want to know what the game is like, I think saying it plays and feels like a cousin of Portal is a nice comparison. You don't have weapons, just your special gloves that can trigger actions, namely manipulating blocks; each block color behaves in a different manner and the main purpose of the game is basically to move on, using the many block combinations to your advantage, by either enabling you to climb up / get across an obstacle or make a chain of events that ends up opening a door for you to move on to the next chamber / section. Later on in the game you...

Duke Nukem Forever review

Posted

Pros: the most fun you can have with an fps, personality, varied gameplay, excellent range of weapons, huge fun in multi-player

Cons: graphics on the outside could be a little better

I'm from the time of the original Duke Nukem, the 2d platform side scroller, and while I played and enjoyed those first games, I didn't get the chance to play Duke Nukem 3d, so my views on Duke Nukem Forever may be somewhat peculiar: in short, I love it. This is probably the most underrated game of the year. And maybe there are a few reasons for that. First and foremost, it would be impossible for a game to live up to all this hype after so many years. And let's face it, many people have grown up since 1996 and their taste may no longer be compatible with the essence of Duke Nukem. But that is not exactly the game's problem, or is it ? On the one side you have a game being released to a...

Intel SSD 320 Series 120 GB review

Posted

Pros: Reliable and fast

Cons: Possible problems in the case of a power outage

I've had this SSD since June 2011 and all I can say is that I made the right choice. 1,03 TB of Host Writes and 811,88 GB of Host Reads, powered on 248 times, with a total of 1907 hours, and no problems whatsoever. Benchmarks I've run confirmed the advertised speeds, both read and write (write was even a little better). Since I bought it some people have complained that under certain circumstances, if there is a power outage, after a few times (it doesn't always happen the first time, so is more likely in places that have frequent power outages) the SSD may report that it only has 8 MB of capacity. In that case you can do a secure erase and you'll get your space back, but of course, lose...

Rage review

Posted

Pros: Varied gameplay, stable framerates, promising game engine

Cons: Low resolution textures (update has been promised), static sky, still some texture pop-in after first patch, lack of atmosphere

Having played a little over 12h30 of the single player campaign, I think I'm qualified to share my thoughts on the game. I've been playing games made by id Software since the days of Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3d, and I've spent some quality time over the years playing games either made by or published by id Software. And judging by all the accolades RAGE got from it's E3 preview, it looked like RAGE, with it's brand new id Tech® 5 engine, would deliver what many expected to be a serious candidate for the game of the year award. So, does it deliver ? Not really. Here is why: Graphics and physics: id's brand new Tech® 5 engine is something of a bizarre thing as of this writing. It...
