Default 65nm Xboxes Headed Inbound

Quote:
WHEN MR. FERRET told you about the 65 nanometre and beyond XBox 360s, what he didn't tell you was how close they are to being out.

Shipping sources in the orient have told us that the parts are 'on a boat' now, and will be available shortly.

That is the good news. The neutral news is that there will be no major outward differences between the 90 and 65nm boxes, but the latter will come with a less powerful PSU. The only real difference is that the 65nm versions will have a differently keyed PSU connector so you don't plug the new PSU into the old box by accident.

The bad news? Microsoft is removing the EE/GS hardware because backwards software compatibility is better in software, even if it runs 20% fewer games. This is for your benefit, and if you can't see why less is more, you must be a moron.

Oh, wait, wrong company, there is no bad 360 news here. µ

I just hate when they try to put something new into it just when you already got yours.

I'm glad that I waited. Smaller die, less heat.

Sweet, the only reason I have been waiting to get one is the 65nm revision.

but why? It offers no improvement other than making it less compatible with games.

less heat, slightly, but what point does it have when you can't overclock..

because HEAT is what is ultimately causing xbox 360's to RRoD, brick, or break, whichever you prefer to call it

Exactly, and possibly the new style heatsink which has been showing up in the 360's that have come back from RMA.

So basically this update allowed Microsoft to cheapen up the unit and hopefully increase reliability, and all that it cost was losing 20% of the first xbox's library. What's twenty percent anyway, it's not like that's in the double digits or anythi... ah, crap.

ps it wasn't heat causing the problems, but poor quality components. Infact there is no evidence at all to suggest that heat at every level will decrease the life of components over a certain amount.

By the way, look at other hardware that has undergone smaller fabrication, the heat output is less than 2 degrees difference.
