Default 3D Graphics Performance in Team Fortress 2

October 15, 2007
Jason Cross

Quote:
At less than $200, the Radeon X1950 Pro turns in a pretty good performance at this resolution with these settings. You'd probably want the game to run a little faster than this for a really good experience, but it is faster than either of the two new DX10 mid-range cards and the GeForce 7900 GT. At a slightly lower resolution, this sub-$200 card could probably run the game fast enough with AA and AF enabled.

In all, it looks like AMD's cards deliver easily the best overall performance in Team Fortress 2 at a given price point. To get comparable performance out cards using Nvidia technology, you have to spend more. The situation changes when you enable anti-aliasing at high resolutions, though. AMD's new cards simply take too great a performance hit from AA, though the X1000 series still chugs along quite well.

prolly coz source engine is that optimised and efficient it doesnt need all that Vram.

im not surprised the Hd2900 kicks arse at that res, like it was always supposed to. one thing that i am glad about (coz i own 2 GTX) but also surprised was that eye candy (AA,AF) on, the HD2900 loses a lot of performance over the GTX.

wasnt the HD2900 meant to have all the raw processing power to pump out the frames at high res/max eye candy? i thought that was ATI's intention.

or is it DX10 that its meant to really shine. either way nice results for both teams.

AFAIK, Team Fortress 2 runs on the source engine, and source doesn't have DX10 support. So all these cards are running at DX9 specs...

So these DX10 cards are not being fully utilized spec wise (?)

Who knows, maybe the 2900XT does better than the GTX at DX10 stuff??? Hard telling with this bench...
