Like others have said, the Source engine is upgraded with each new game. HL2 and HL2:EP2 don't run the same engine, but different versions of it.

Valve is very good at balancing CPU and GPU to allow fairly slow computers run the game well. And on high settings, the graphics look very realistic, near to Crysis, but without the slow down.

After you play hl2 and the 2 episodes you have no choice but to play ep3 Half-life is awesome though.
