Details in an Activision SEC filing uncovered by GameSpot has confirmed the existence of a new Guitar Hero title focused on the long-running heavy metal act Metallica in Guitar Hero: Metallica, scheduled for release in early 2009.

"In fiscal 2009, we plan to publish Guitar Hero: On Tour for the NDS; Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: Metallica, and Guitar Hero IV across multiple platforms," the company said in the filing.

Activision's 2009 fiscal year ends on March 31 of next year, pinning the previously unannounced Guitar Hero: Metallica for a release prior to that time. The multiple-instrument update to the series, Guitar Hero IV, is expected this fall, making a release in the 2008 calendar year unlikely for Guitar Hero: Metallica.

No platforms were divulged in the filing, though Activision's other band-centric offshoot Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is slated to appear on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 2.

Part of me wants this because its Metallica, but the other half doesn't because Activision is just milking the Guitar Hero series as much as possible, just like the Call of Duty Series, E.A. may have some competition?

meh, I want to see another oldies one, not metalica. I guess it's good for people who like that music, but... meh.
I'm into rock music from the 60s-early 80s, I want to see more of those (jimi hendrix / beatles (I haven't seen any of either of their songs in a GH game (apple records (beatles) is really tight with selling the rights to songs)))

Probably won't buy it; I really don't care for Metallica after the Black Album, and the pessimist in me thinks that's what this will mostly be (because that's when they got "popular"). But it's at least it's a better choice than Aerosmith.

What I really want to see is an all-grunge collection. Long live Nirvana!
