Default [Wired] Blizzard: Microsoft Doesn't Care About PC Gaming

http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/07/...rd-micros.html

Quote:
Microsoft should "put more emphasis on the Windows operating system," Blizzard Entertainment COO Paul Sams recently told Gamasutra.

"Their gaming focus is very much on the [Xbox] 360. And that makes sense, cause they're a hardware manufacturer as well as a software developer," Sams pointed out.

Sams' words follow closely on the heels of comments made by Blizzard president Rob Pardo, who spoke out about this topic at the recent Game Developers Conference in Paris: "They have their own game system now, so I don't think it's really in their best interest to support [PC gaming]."

Both Sams and Pardo make an excellent point: How can (and more importantly, why would) Microsoft devote enough resources and manpower to promote gaming on the PC when they are directly competing with the platform via the Xbox 360?

I agree with Microsoft. PC gaming does not have that much money in it for Microsoft. No need for them to peruse PC gaming at all by improving their OS for people to play games on as it would most likely be hurtful to other departments. Linux should be the one making a move for PC gaming. Microsoft needs to retain their revenue with the Xbox.

Imagin if MS didn't support games...

The PC gaming community would be in an uproar! There would be no other logical replacement (unless other OS's improved dramatically).

Theoretically Windows should not be the gaming platform. Its too bloated and takes up waaaay too many resources. Sure, you can slim it down with Vlite and Nlite and do some registry tweaks but the average consumer doesnt know this. If anything a super trimmed down version of linux would be great for gaming. If only Nvidia and ATI made superior drivers for the platform instead of driivers that only provided 1/2 the performance. But that is just my opinion.

That's a good idea. Someone should make an OS (probably Linux based) that only support gaming. That's it... just gaming. You could run Windows or Linux or whatever OS you like for normal tasks, but you boot up a separate OS strictly for gaming. Wait... isn't that a console? Maybe this is where the merger of consoles and PCs will lead.

I dont see why this is not possible. I understand, Microsoft wants to make money on the xbox 360 (blah blah blah) BUT even making windows normal and switching it to "gaming mode" could be possible too. All the normal services that make windows a productive workstation could be switched off once a game is started and vice versa. I know many people have said this before but its something that should have been obvious for a gaming OS.

Uh. They don't need improvement in order to be gaming platforms, they just need games.

Linux is far better than Windows, it's just that games are made to run in DirectX mode rather than OpenGL or other open graphics libraries. Perhaps this console flop of Microsoft will lead developers to look at Linux, Mac and OpenGL more than they do currently. We can hope..

Well... you have to think of WHY developers use DirectX instead of OpenGL. Developers obviously know that OpenGL works on other OSes and would increase their market. However, DirectX gets technical support and development from MS. OpenGL doesn't.

I think you are full of it lol JK. Windows does not eat up TO MUCH resources, maybe more than other OS's but still not to much. Windows is a great OS, has been for quite some time. I have been using Windows sense 98 and I like it more than any other I have used so far. It fits for practical use... you want to play a game widows can play them all, same with programs and utilities. Widows is a great OS that can do it all with out having to switch to another OS. I know you linux user tend to be narrow minded and bias, but lets face it widows can do anything and there is a lot more support and user friendlyness.

Oh and one last thing if it uses to much resources then you need a new rig. My vista Ultimate uses about half a gig of RAM with 46 processes, 12 of which I can end task on at anytime. Things like u torrent, sidebar, Avast, Zone alarm, dream scene, Firefox, WMP, and burning a DVD right now. So using 25% of my RAM and only about 300mb on start up seems like very little resources to me.
