Default [Spong] Sony: No PS3 Price Cuts

Quote:
Sony Corporation's chief financial officer - Nobuyuki Oneda - has popped up in Singapore to quell any rumours about a forthcoming price cut for the PlayStation 3.

The Wall Street Journal, no less, quotes the CFO has going for the quality over quantity argument and saying, "Our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability.

"Our plan is not to reduce the price."

Why the top accountant at Sony Corporation would be the mouthpiece for the statement rather than, for example, Kaz Hirai who heads up the specific division, is an interesting one. Of course, it all comes down to the new "all joined up" Sony Corp, there's nothing else to see here... move along.

So, that leaves us - or at least the USA - with an Xbox 360 price cut driving the Microsoft box and the Wii ever closer together.

Makes sense, they are selling more PS3s now than ever. Once that slows down they might reconsider.

Strange, I'd think selling more units work make them more money, primarily from games/accessories.

If they are selling well now then its good to keep the current RRP. Sony needs to make some money on these machines anyway to cover intitial production loss.

Well, seeing as at launch price they were taking a loss, and they are selling very well now, no reason to drop prices again. You only drop prices when you can't move product at a given price, and they can.

No price drop now means a guaranteed price drop in 5 months for the holidays.

$399 is pretty cheap considering what you get, the cheapest blu-ray player out there are still 400+ and they don't have wifi or a 40gb hard drive let alone the ability to play games.

oops i forgot the ability to fold
i have had my ps3 since november, have only played 1 game gta4 ( a combined 4 hours..maybe) other than that its used to watch movies (blu-ray + upscaled dvds) and fold the rest of the time

people are buying PS3's almost as an accessory just for metal gear solid 4 right now. Its already cheap as chips at £299 for both. I think its got to the point now where people dont need to try too hard to justify buying a PS3. Whether its the games or the blu-ray or free online play.

its funny because i remember paying 499 for my ps2 and it doesn't do 1/4 of the things the ps3 can.

also since there is not going to be any price drops i can finally get my dad to pick up his new blu-ray player / my 2nd folding ps3 lol

I'm still broke, so I'll be waiting till Christmas. Hopefully I can get my parents to buy me one last game console, if it gets to that magical $300 mark that is.
