Default [H] Playstation 2’s Success Fueled African War

Quote:
Africa’s World War, which raged for almost a decade starting in 1998, has recently been called “The PlayStation War.” Researchers claim that Sony’s need for columbite-tantalite ore, colloquially named “Coltan,” helped fuel the conflict by driving up prices for the ore and enticing the Rwandan army to take coltan mines by force to take advantage of the market.

Quote:
After it is refined, coltan becomes a bluish-gray powder called tantalum, which is defined as a transition metal. For the most part, tantalum has one significant use: to satisfy the West’s insatiable appetite for personal technology. Tantalum is used to make cell phones, laptops and other electronics made, for example, by SONY, a multi-billion dollar multinational based in Japan that manufactures the iconic PlayStation, a video game console.

What? So lots of electronic devices use this, and they put the blame on Sony for a war that has happened partially because of the metal? Sony doesn't have any say in the events in other countries, if they want someone to blame it should be the UN.

Yeah, like the west is the only part of the world that consumes electronics. How about China?

I agree.

What a ludicrous statement to say that Sony and in particular the Playstation 2 fuelled a war.

I think they mean per person.

No one has a feasible excuse to say that the blame shouldn't be shifted onto someone else.

That wouldn't be as sensationalist.

I think this is a case of "which came first, the chicken or the egg?", because if someone were to take over a country, of course they would take over the economy of said country. To suggest that mining operations helped fuel a war is just ludicrous in this case because it has nothing to do with the war. Genocide, religion, and power are the reasons for their wars.

Besides, if we are looking for the ultimate party to blame, look no further than the former European empires (UK, France, Holland/The Netherlands...). If anyone is to blame for Africa being in shambles it is them for the way they ended their empires earlier in the century.

sounds like someone, on the reporting side, has a bias against sony
besides, there has been conflict in that region for centuries
