I could see that...the context he made that statement, and the obvious popularity that such a game would enjoy, would make this a good prediction.

I don't know if "shocking" is the right word though, but maybe that's the translation. Or maybe just me...but given the fan base's constant clamoring for this, can you really be shocked? (Maybe they're shocked that Sony listened to their request. ) Me personally, I would be "shocked" if Sony abandoned Blu-Ray, or if the PS2 was officially killed off, or even if they announced the PS4. Or if they announced some kind of partnership with Microsoft...now that would be shocking!!!

Just think of the buzz that Diablo 3 has gotten by announcing its existence. Gamers have flocked to buy the previous games and Sony has definitely made every Final Fantasy prior to 7 available in a remake to anyone wanting them. However, they probably won't want to release it until XIII is out and exhausted.

You can't really compare the flocking of diable to FF series
being that majority of ps3s out there now are probably non BC. No one would pay 150 just to play a game thats over 6 years old. Instead they will use emulators.
